Position Summary and Purpose
The employee assists the anesthesia provider in the acquisition preparation and application of the anesthesia equipment and supplies required for the safe administration of anesthesia. They participate in safe efficient and cost-effective anesthesia care. The employee provides support in anesthesia for routine and complex surgical and non-surgical cases by assisting in the preparation and maintenance of patient monitoring devices anesthesia delivery systems medicines and supplies before during and after anesthesia cases. The employee may perform certain complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures at the direction of the anesthesia staff. The employee maintains inventory of supplies in rooms cleans and stocks rooms after surgeries and verifies drugs and supplies are not outdated. The employee may set-up drips A-Lines and Central Lines. This employee uses sterile techniques to gown and glove set up lines and assist the anesthesia provider with placement of lines in patient. The employee helps position the patient for surgery assists provider with intubation and assists provider with extuation. The employee helps the provider transport patient to recovery.
Essential Functions:
Directs ordering anesthesia supplies and prepares anesthesia equipment and supplies for the operating rooms
Assists in maintaining equipment in proper working order cleans and returns cleaned equipment to its proper place and stocks surgical rooms
Assists anesthesia provider and promptly responds to page for anesthesia turnover between cases
Responds to alarm systems to assist with trouble shooting of equipment
Assists with patient pick up and blood product pick-up and runs ABGs / blood glucose under the direction of an anesthesia provider
Other Functions:
Keeps anesthesia work room neat and orderly
Checks other areas including the Post-anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Advanced Care Unit (ACU) Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) for monitoring devices for patient transfer and returns them to surgery unit
Applies aseptic technique and knowledge in the spiking of IVs & A-lines or other invasive lines
Correctly labels/dates and applies initials to pre-set lines
Efficiently cleans and utilizes anesthesia instruments and equipment
Performs or assists with the emergency procedure for Malignant Hyperthermia as necessary
Assists with Vendor trials work orders and equipment quotes
Maintains compliance with all company policies procedures and standards of conduct
Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
Performs other duties as assigned
Job Requirements
(Education Experience Licensure and Certification)
Education:
High school diploma or GED/equivalent (required)
College experience/ courses in Anatomy Physiology and Microbiology (preferred)
Experience:
Prior experience as an anesthesia technician or in a patient-care role (preferred)
Knowledge of pharmacology (preferred)
Certification:
Basic Life Saving (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required)
Certification by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologist (ASAT) (preferred)
Job Competency:
Knowledge Skills and Abilities critical to this role:
Knowledge of the emergency procedure for malignant hyperthermia
Knowledge of anesthesia equipment
Knowledge of troubleshooting low and high pressure in anesthesia machines
Understanding of sterile technique
Must possess organizational skills which are essential for stocking of anesthesia carts and setting up lines
Must have strong relationship building skills and the ability to make and use connections throughout UofL Health to complete projects and maintain strong partnerships with other departments
Must have strong initiative and be able to gather and analyze information skillfully and be able to brainstorm alternative resources and directions
Must be able to break down complex tasks into manageable parts in a systematic detailed way and considers input from several sources
Must be detail orientation in gathering relevant data while attending to essential details; checks work for accuracy and quality
Must be able to problem-solve by identifying and resolving problems in a timely manner as well as develop alternative solutions when needed
Must have great flexibility and the ability to continually look for ways to make appropriate adjustments and changes rather than identifying why things cannot be accomplished in order to meet to the changing needs of UofL Health and the Patient Experience Department
Language Ability:
Adequate conversational English is required in order that the individual be able to take direction from management understand how to complete job tasks communicate adequately with patients and co-workers as necessary understand and follow safety guidelines and organizational policies.

Must be comfortable working with Microsoft Word Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint if necessary
