JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for the universitys financial strategy planning and stewardship. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer initially the position provides strategic leadership to ensure the institutions fiscal health operational efficiency and compliance with all applicable regulations. This role partners with academic and administrative leaders to align financial resources with the universitys mission vision and long-term goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Financial Leadership:
- Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the universitys mission and strategic plan.
- Advise the President Board of Trustees and senior leadership on financial planning risk management and investment strategies.
- Lead multi-year budgeting and forecasting processes to ensure long-term fiscal stability.
- Oversee the development of cashflow and advanced operating and capital budget forecasting models for multi-year planning and scenario analysis to anticipate financial challenges and opportunities to inform proactive decision-making.
- Direct the preparation management and monitoring of the annual operating and capital budgets to ensure alignment with strategic goals and available financial resources.
- Establish and enforce accountability measures for budget managers across departments.
- Financial Operations Reporting and Compliance:
- Oversee accounting finance procurement treasury functions and related systems.
- Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles audit and federal state and local regulations as well as applicable higher education standards.
- Direct the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements reports and analyses.
- Prepare and present financial reports to various stakeholders including departments heads university leadership and the Board of Trustees. Clearly communicate financial results forecasts and recommendations in a manner easily understood by non-financial colleagues.
- Develop and maintain financial dashboards to monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to provide and enable data-driven decision-making for university leadership and budget managers.
- Resource Management & Optimization
- Identify opportunities for cost efficiencies revenue growth and sustainable financial practices.
- Collaborate with academic and administrative leaders to conduct financial analyses of new and existing programs.
- Support program viability assessments program level contribution margin risk analysis and opportunities for growth through financial modeling and scenario planning.
- Ensure proper financial oversight and risk mitigation aligns with the Universitys strategic goals.
- Maintain compliance with federal state and accreditation requirements
- Oversee internal controls and risk management processes
- Manage risk and financial aspects of contracts with vendors external partners and service providers.
- Endowment and Investment Oversight:
- Manage the universitys endowment and investments in alignment with the policies and investment guidelines.
- Collaborate with the Board of Trustees Operations Committee to manage endowment funds and other long-term investments.
- Lead mentor and develop finance and accounting teams including managing work allocation training and problem solving.
- Foster a team dynamic that embraces a culture of continuous improvement.
- Foster relationships with banks auditors donors and other external partners.
- Serve as liaison to the Board of Trustees Operations Committee and Audit Committees.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education and Experience
- Masters degree in Finance Accounting Business Administration or related field (CPA or CFA preferred).
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience preferably in higher education or a complex nonprofit organization.
- Proven record in strategic planning budgeting forecasting and financial analysis.
- Strong knowledge of higher education funding models grants and endowment management.
- Exceptional communication negotiation and people skills.
