The Womans Hospital Perinatal Mental Health Unit is the states first inpatient pregnancy and postpartum psychiatric unit. The unit has a specialty focus on adult perinatal women suffering from acute mental health conditions and requiring detainment for the treatment of perinatal women suffering from mental health illness.
A registered nurse in the Perinatal Mental Health Unit is responsible for providing specialized care and support to pregnant women and new mothers experiencing mental health challenges. This role involves assessment treatment education and support to ensure the overall well-being and mental health of the mother.
Requirements:
- Active RN licensure through the Louisiana State Board of Nursing required.
- Two years of experience in mental health nursing required.
- Bachelors degree in nursing with a specialization in mental health preferred.
- Certification in mental health nursing preferred.
- Knowledge of perinatal mental health disorders treatments and therapeutic approaches highly preferred.
- Crisis/Violence Intervention Training preferred.
Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
- Responsible for directing/coordinating nursing care based on professional nursing practice standards in accordance with ANA Standards & the LA Nurse Practice Act.
- Seeks professional development; maintains knowledge & skills required to deliver nursing care in assigned area.
- Conduct thorough assessments of pregnant women and new mothers to identify mental health concerns including anxiety depression psychosis or other perinatal mental health disorders.
- Evaluate the psychological and emotional well-being of the patient to determine appropriate care plans.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop individualized care plans based on the assessment findings medical history and specific mental health needs of the patient.
- Establish goals and interventions to address mental health issues and enhance coping mechanisms for the mother.
- Administer and monitor medications as prescribed ensuring appropriate dosage monitoring for side effects and providing education to the patient and their family regarding medication management.
- Collaborates with healthcare team and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated and holistic care for the patient.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records documenting assessments care plans interventions and patient progress.
- Participation in environmental safety rounds daily and as designated by healthcare team for sustained monitoring of patient safety to unit.
- Provide timely and detailed reports to the healthcare team and supervisors.
- Perform other duties assigned by department management according to policies and procedures and the mission of Womans Hospital.
Schedule
PRN Minimum Shifts: Two 12-hour day (6:30a-7p) or night shifts (6:30p-7a) per 4-week period
- 1 weekend shift and 1 weekday shift required
- Work 1 Major and 1 Minor holiday required
- Assigned to an Emergency Staffing Team at hire
