Supervise and lead a close-knit field team responsible for implementing the Bushfire Management Program with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.

About the role

National Parks and Wildlife Service has an opportunity for a Field Supervisor BMP (Bushfire Management Program) to work as part of the team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment flora fauna and Aboriginal heritage. The BMP field team is primarily involved in fuel reduction activities by both mechanical means and prescribed fire and during periods of high bushfire activity will be required to participate in bushfire suppression or other bushfire response functions.

Reporting to the Senior Field Supervisor the position will involve travel across the North Coast Branch working with the five operational Areas and their Team Leaders Operations to support the delivery of their fire program works and to help facilitate their preparedness and response for wildfire. This will involve leading and supervising two Field Officers at Clarence Area Depot in Grafton and at times working from the Toormina BMP Depot particularly during the start-up of your team and recruitment. Working cooperatively with other BMP Field Supervisors located at Toormina Depot and at the Alstonville Depot youll be expected to be involved in and lead fire ground operations including hazard reduction burns and wildfire suppression operations.

Supervising and developing a team is critical to the success of this role and the ability to adapt to change finding solutions to problems and ensuring safety is always a priority. Heavy plant experience is an advantage as the team operates a variety of heavy plant to carry out the works program. This includes beaver tailed HR trucks dozers and skid steer loaders with mulching heads for vegetation management.

About you

The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader and motivated to drive a positive and collaborative culture throughout the team including demonstrated experience in:

  • leading field teams including bushfire fighting
  • developing works and maintenance programs including project planning working to specifications documentation cost estimates procurement and monitoring
  • setting and maintaining performance standards and ensuring codes of conduct and met
  • using and operating heavy plant and equipment including managing a workshop and overseeing vehicle fleet management. The role also requires managing and maintaining diverse range of small plant and other equipment
  • Have ability to use corporate systems and procedures and use manage and report using Departments Asset Management Systems.
  • Lead by example with a strong safety culture and apply Department safe work procedures and risk assessment.

Essential requirements

  • Current Drivers / MR licence and demonstrated ability to operating 4wd vehicles and heavy plant up to 4.5 tonnes/15 tonne GVM and ability to obtain a First Aid Certificate.
  • Ability to carry out frontline firefighting duties and incident management roles including ability to obtain and maintain certification as a crew leader or higher within the probationary period (up to 12 months) certification and experience in chainsaw operations to at least cross-cut and basic tree-felling level ability to operate two-way radio and a willingness to fly in light aircraft.

This is a physically active role suited to candidates of all genders who are fit enjoy working outdoors as part of a team and are eager to learn and develop the skills and qualifications needed to contribute toward improving and maintaining some of NSWs most precious natural places.

Field Officer applicants must meet the requirements of a firefighting medical which is inclusive of a clearance to undertake frontline firefighting roles. The applicant must pass the task based fitness assessment to a moderate level within the probationary period (up to 12 months) and annually thereafter.
