About the Department:

Civil Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering (CEIE) is a vibrant department that offers MS and PhD programs in addition to an ABET-accredited BS degree. With special emphases in supporting the design construction maintenance operation and optimization of smart sustainable and resilient civil engineered systems and livable communities CEIEs total enrollment across all degrees has reached nearly 450 students and new research awards haveexperienced tremendous growth. CEIE faculty benefit from laboratory space at the Potomac Science Center a water-front state of the art research facility at the tidal waters of Belmont Bay with 50000-square-foot that houses laboratories for teaching and research lecture rooms event space and outdoor trails. The department also has an enviable and strong relationship with industry including over 40 companies and individuals working in partnership as the Civil Engineering Institute ( a unique organization formed to support the mission and vision of the department. The ongoing revolution in computing and sensing is not only changing how we buildit is transforming what it means to be a civil engineer. We are seeking a forward-thinking faculty colleague to lead this charge through computing-driven research and high-impact teaching that prepares students for this emergent future.

Areas of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Digital twin modeling and simulation
  • AI in the design and management of environmental and/or civil infrastructure systems
  • Advanced sensing in hydrology and ecosystem monitoring
  • Robotics in civil engineering
  • Theoretical and applied integrations of AI in environmental and/or infrastructure systems

In this role the candidate will be joining an ecosystem designed for transdisciplinary collaboration and translation. They will have the unique opportunity to:

  • Collaborate across boundaries through transdisciplinary organizations like the Institute for Digital Innovation and the Institute for a Sustainable Earth.
  • Translate research into reality at our newly opened Fuse at Mason Square a state-of-the-art hub dedicated to university-industry partnerships.
  • Directly influence our profession through our strategic location in the DC Metro area.

Responsibilities:

Teaching

  • Teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Research

  • Develops an independent externally funded research program.

Service

  • Advises students;
  • Participates in all aspects of the departments mission; and
  • Serves the profession.

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have received a PhD in Civil Engineering or a closely related field by the start date of the position;
  • Have demonstrated potential for excellence and productivity in research and a commitment to high-quality teaching;
  • Applicants must be able to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in one of the following areas ideally integrating their expertise into curricula:
    • Hydrology and water resources;
    • Structural and materials engineering;
    • Construction and infrastructure management; and
    • Environmental engineering.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evaluation of the candidate will be based on the innovative nature of their work and their potential for future excellence rather than any particular specialization; and
  • A demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines in engineering computing and humanities is desirable.

About the College:

The College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) at George Mason University is a fast-growing force for innovation in research and education.
