Job Description
As a Traffic Engineering Intern with Gwinnett Countys Department of Transportation the incumbent assists with performing engineering analysis and evaluation of traffic signals Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) infrastructure and other traffic control devices. Responsibilities include supporting traffic signal and ATMS upgrades timing optimization projects and section administration and maintenance activities such as signal design drawings equipment inventory GIS mapping and development impact reviews. The intern also contributes to in-house analysis and evaluation studies by analyzing transportation needs preparing technical reports and reviewing study findings. Additional duties include evaluating results identifying cost-effective repair solutions and providing technical support to address a variety of operational challenges.
Essential Duties- Assisting with responding to citizen service requests by conducting field investigations reviewing existing documentation and recommending appropriate solutions
- Assisting with collecting field data to document existing roadway conditions and infrastructure assets in support of plan review and GIS modifications
- Assisting with maintaining and updating GIS databases using field data engineering plans and related documentation
- Assisting with reviewing development and construction plans to identify potential impacts conflicts and required relocation of ATMS infrastructure
- Assisting with consolidating and organizing existing spreadsheets to improve data clarity accuracy and overall usability
- Assisting with Traffic Control Center (TCC) operations including system monitoring tracking incoming calls and coordinating response activities
- Becoming familiar with engineering standards including the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the AASHTO Green Book
- Assisting with performing field measurements in accordance with established engineering standards and best practices
- Assisting Traffic Signal Engineers with signalized corridor retiming and timing optimization projects
- Becoming familiar with traffic analysis software including Synchro ATSPM and AASHTOWare Safety
- Assisting Signal Technicians with identifying maintenance issues and coordinating field investigations as needed
Public Speaking Duties- Communicating and engaging with staff citizens leadership and elected officials as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. AND
- One academic year of college majoring in engineering construction or related fields
- Be in good academic standing (e.g. not on academic probation)
