A successful and well-regarded state secondary school in St Albans are seeking to appoint an inspiring and dedicated Head of Music to lead its thriving Music Department.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced teacher to shape and develop a vibrant music provision within a school that values creativity performance and cultural enrichment.

The successful candidate will play a key role in developing pupils musical skills encouraging participation in performance opportunities and promoting a lifelong appreciation of music.


The Role

The Head of Music will lead the department and oversee the delivery of an engaging and inclusive music curriculum.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and managing the Music Department ensuring high-quality teaching and learning

  • Teaching Music across Key Stages 3 and 4 with potential opportunities to teach Key Stage 5

  • Preparing pupils for GCSE Music examinations securing strong academic outcomes

  • Developing a broad extra-curricular music programme including choirs ensembles and instrumental groups

  • Organising and leading school concerts performances and musical events

  • Supporting pupils preparing for instrumental examinations and further study in music

  • Managing departmental resources including instruments equipment and rehearsal spaces

  • Working collaboratively with senior leaders and staff to support the wider life of the school

The successful candidate will also contribute to the schools enrichment programme and wider cultural activities.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • A strong academic background in Music or a related discipline

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

  • Experience teaching Music at secondary level including GCSE

  • The ability to inspire pupils and develop musical talent across all abilities

  • Strong leadership and organisational skills

  • A willingness to lead extra-curricular music and school performances

  • A clear understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities
