About you and this role

The Dow Chemical Company has an opening for an R&D/TS&D Technical internship position in the R&D Characterization Group in Tarragona Spain. This is a characterization and analytical group under the Global R&D Characterization organization in the Plastics and Specialty Packaging and Hydrocarbons (P&SPH) business which characterizes polyethylene (PE) resins films additives and different type of plastic fabricated articles to support manufacturing plants R&D projects technical service developments and process improvements. The Tarragona R&D Characterization laboratory (LACAT) provides characterization and testing support to internal and external clients in the areas of chromatography microscopy thermal and spectroscopy.

Responsibilities

• The person in this internship will work closely with technicians research scientists engineers and group leader on a business case which is an improvement project to make sure that the technical capabilities of the laboratory are kept current.
• In this internship project the student will have the opportunity to learn how to work in a Plastics Characterization lab applying chromatography techniques in combination with an appropriate sample preparation method to expand the existing methods for the characterization and quantification of the additives present in various polymers .
• The internship student is expected to demonstrate a high level of ownership and initiative in their project with a primary focus on the Characterization of additives in PE resins by gas chromatography.
• The student will work on a method development to quantify new additives. Having a quantitative method for the measurement of additives is key to ensure that the resin will not degrade during subsequent processing and also that the fabricated article will show the expected level of performance.
• It is essential for the candidate to be actively working in a laboratory environment and be open for learning new characterization techniques. Problem-solving abilities teamwork skills time management and proficiency in Microsoft tools are crucial for success in this internship position.

Qualifications

• You are currently studying for a . degree in chemical engineering chemistry materials science or equivalent in degrees in applied sciences.
• You have a good working knowledge of English and Spanish.
• You have knowledge of Microsoft tools such as Excel Power point and Word.
• Openness to learning new skills and adapting to changing technologies and methodologies in a dynamic work environment.
• You have ability to critical thinking and problem-solving.
• An individual contributor who is also a good team player is required. The candidate should demonstrate a passion for chemistry and applying innovative ideas.
• You can start between May-June for a period of 6-9 months. You will be remunerated.
