Job Summary

Job Title: Basic Grade Medical Scientist (Assigned to Clinical Chemistry Haematology and Blood Transfusion).

Reports to: Chief Medical Scientist/Nominated Deputy in the relevant area.

Location: Pathology Bon Secours Hospital Dublin

Job Purpose: The fundamental philosophy guiding this position is to promote and preserve the Bon Secours Mission Values and Ethos. To participate in the provision of a quality laboratory service for the benefit of our patients and stakeholders.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

In collaboration with the Chief Medical Scientist/Nominated Deputy:

General:

  • The post holder will be assigned to Clinical Chemistry Haematology/Blood transfusion departments on rotation as required.
  • The post holder will perform routine laboratory scientific work to the highest standard in accordance with the Departments policies procedures and guidelines.
  • Maintain competence in all relevant areas of the laboratory services.
  • Support colleagues and work collaboratively with all team members.
  • In co-operation with the Laboratory Manager and the relevant Chief Medical Scientist participate in service development and improvement.
  • Participate as required in the management of stock including reagents and other consumables.
  • Participate as required in developing the laboratory information system for the department.
  • Participate in the out-of-hours/weekend service as required.
  • Behave in a professional manner consistent with organisational values.

Quality Assurance:

  • Actively and positively support the Hospital in maintaining JCI and ISO15189 accreditation and any other best practice standards or guidelines that may apply to diagnostic laboratories.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with international and national guidelines and standards for the provision of service and actively participate in internal quality control and external quality assessment.
  • Adhere to all laboratorys standard operating procedures policies and guidelines.
  • Perform tasks and duties in a manner that ensures compliance with relevant regulations including the Blood Directive 2002/98/EC and the Medical Devices Directives 93/42/EC and 98/79/EC where applicable.
  • Participate in all aspects of the quality management system including audits and non-conformances.
  • Participate in evaluating and monitoring equipment in the department.
  • Adhere to quality standards and ensure a quality service is always provided.

Education and Training:

  • Participate in a performance review.
  • Participate in facilitating arrangements for educating and training staff.
  • Participate in the education and training of healthcare workers as required.
  • Participate in research and development activities.
  • Demonstrate continuing professional development.
  • Demonstrate professional accountability for Medical Scientists practice.

Health and Safety:

  • Maintain and promote safe work practices.
  • Participate in ensuring that effective safety procedures are in place to comply with health and safety regulations ensuring safe working practices and a safe working environment.
  • Assist and cooperate with the Pathology management team in developing procedures to be followed in preventing and managing accidents.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Candidates for appointment must Possess:

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science from the Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT). Or

Bachelor of Science (Honours) Biomedical Science Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). Or

Bachelor in Science Honours degree in Biomedical Science from the Joint University College Cork Cork Institute of Technology course AND Diploma in Clinical Laboratory Practice. Or

Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) or Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) AND Bachelor in Science (Applied Science) Honours degree (Biomedical option) from the University of Dublin/Dublin Institute of Technology (Awarded prior to 2002). Or

Bachelor of Biomedical Science Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) AND BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences University College Cork (UCC). (Awarded prior to 2013). Or

Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences of the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) or the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) (Awarded prior to 1994). Or

Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science awarded before 1997 by Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) or Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT). Or

An equivalent qualification validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM).

Demonstrate evidence of Continuous Professional Development. And

Membership or eligibility for Membership/Fellowship of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM).

Must be registered with CORU or eligible for membership upon completion of study.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE

  • Experience working in an ISO 15189 accredited medical diagnostic laboratory.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE

  • Working knowledge of Q-Pulse.
  • Experience of working with Laboratory Information System (i.e. iLab)

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Good interpersonal/people skills ability to work on own initiative problem solving skills patience diligence honesty excellent communication skills
