The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Sport Fish is recruiting
for two Fish and Wildlife Technician 3s located in Palmer Alaska!
What You Will Be Doing:
Under the direction of a Fishery biologist this position works out of the Palmer ADF&G Sport Fish office at the Little Susitna and Deshka River salmon weirs in remote field camps. The work schedule is 8 days on 6 days off (Thursday Thursday each week) approximately May 1- September 15. As crew leader this position works along-side and leads the work of one other Fish and Wildlife Technician. The crew leader ensures quality control of all data collected and maintenance of the weir during a shift. The crew leader also must effectively communicate with the crew leader of the other two person crew to coordinate shift change out each week. This position performs vital salmon research and management functions. Other duties include operating and maintaining jet boats; operating a highway vehicle with boat trailer; deploying operating maintaining and dismantling weirs and field camps; collecting biological samples; and performing stream surveys on spawning coho salmon.
This position will be staffed from approximately May 1 through September 30th.

Fisheries Technicians with the Division of Sportfish perform the field work that is vital to collecting the data used to manage our fisheries. This position will provide not only entry level fisheries experience but also provides a working knowledge of the types of projects and information need to manage our fisheries. This position involves working entirely in a beautiful river setting in remote Alaska. Further the incumbent in this position will get to work with and learn how to use state of the art equipment and technologies. Several technicians working on Palmer area Sportfish projects have gone on to more senior level positions in Palmer and throughout the State of Alaska.
The Working Environment You Can Expect:
This position will be stationed at a remote field camp on either the Little Susitna River or the Deshka River. Living accommodations include tents on raised wooden platforms and food will be supplied weekly. The successful candidate for this position will expect to live at this location for approximately five months working 8 day shifts.
Required items include: Valid Alaska Drivers License. Living at a remote field camp provides few amenities and requires the ability to conduct routine maintenance including operation repairing and maintaining small power tools small skiffs and outboard motors. Traveling by truck and boat is required to reach the Deshka River field camp. Working at the Little Susitna River will involve being exposed to biting insects working around wildlife and working in variable weather conditions.

This position may be in possession of or have access to firearms/ammunition.
Provided by the Department if not already certified:
CPR/First Aid Training
Firearms/Wildlife Safety Training
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher guide or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection.
Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying travel by boat or skiff or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.
Fields of study comparable to fisheries wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture biology ichthyology microbiology ornithology and zoology.
