for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Homer Alaska!
What You Will Be Doing:
The Alaska Department of Fish & Game Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a short term non perm Fisheries Technician 3 in Homer Alaska. This position will provide hands on opportunity to work with a dynamic group of groundfish and shellfish fisheries in Prince William Sound and Cook Inlet. The Homer groundfish and shellfish group offers a diversity of duties ranging from traveling to small fishing ports for groundfish and shellfish sampling to working on participating in surveys onboard department research vessels. Your work will directly contribute to the management of a diverse array of fisheries ranging from PWS spot shrimp to Cook Inlet Pacific cod and more. Working in a team environment traveling and working solo around the Kenai Peninsula and picking up new skills are a few highlights of this position. This role is well suited for individuals seeking a dynamic hands-on fisheries position that combines fieldwork data analysis and meaningful contributions to sustainable fisheries management in Alaska.

Prince William Sound and Cook Inlet support a variety of dynamic commercial fisheries for groundfish and shellfish and the incumbent will contribute directly to the Divisions mission by working with fishing fleets in fisheries ranging from small scale directed rockfish and lingcod fisheries to large jointly managed state and federal Pacific cod fisheries.

The Division of Commercial Fisheries groundfish and shellfish team in Homer offers a balanced combination of institutional knowledge new perspectives to address fisheries challenges and good old fashioned hard work with lots of fish slime and scales.
The Working Environment You Can Expect:
This position will work out of the Homer ADF&G office but will travel frequently to ports around the Kenai Peninsula. This position will have the opportunity to travel to Cordova for extended periods of time through the duration of the position. Interaction with the general public in the Homer ADF&G office will be frequent and you will also work closely with commercial fishing fleets to coordinate sampling across multiple ports. The opportunity for a flexible schedule exists however many working days will be determined by port sampling dynamics within fisheries.
Frequent travel on short notice (six hours).
Extended travel for periods of time.
Work in inclement and cold weather.
Able to communicate and engage with the public in a positive manner.
Who We Are Looking For:
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

A valid drivers license is required.
This position may be in possession of or have access to firearms/ammunition.
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher guide or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection.
Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying travel by boat or skiff or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.
Fields of study comparable to fisheries wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture biology ichthyology microbiology ornithology and zoology.
