Reports to Hospital Director

The Richmond SPCA is a non-profit organization located in the heart of Richmond Virginia. As a leader in the field of animal welfare we are cultivating a community committed to saving protecting and enriching animal lives with a mission to provide education and resources to achieve and sustain a no-kill community. Annually we rescue rehabilitate and find homes for about 4000 homeless animals while also providing our region with vital safety net programs designed to keep thousands of pets in loving homes and out of shelters. Our Susan M. Markel Veterinary hospital provides low-cost veterinary care to pets recently adopted from our humane center and pets belonging to clients of modest means. The goal of our veterinary hospital is to make veterinary care for companion animals more accessible to keep pets in loving homes.


The Hospital Manager plays an essential role in supporting our mission to provide accessible high-quality veterinary care to pets in our community. This position oversees the daily operations and performance of the hospitals support staff ensuring patients receive compassionate care and clients feel supported at every visit. Working closely with hospital leadership the Hospital Manager helps strengthen workflows develop staff and helps steer the hospital towards its goals.


Essential Functions

  • Hire onboard schedule and directly supervise support staff team of approximately 20 employees including Hospital Administrative Assistant Veterinary Assistants and Client Service Representatives.
  • Ensure the delivery of excellent patient care and that support staff consistently maintain appropriate standards of care.
  • Develop and maintain systems for staff training.
  • Monitor employee progress during training and provide ongoing coaching feedback and performance support.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews for support staff in collaboration with the Hospital Director.
  • Foster a positive workplace culture rooted in teamwork accountability customer service and compassionate care across all support teams.
  • Identify and coordinate professional development training for staff to support growth and operational excellence.
  • Manage payroll processing for support staff ensuring compliance with organizational policies.
  • Ensure delivery of excellent customer service and resolve client concerns or service issues promptly and professionally.
  • Communicate operational updates and challenges to Hospital Director on an ongoing basis.
  • Collaborate with the Hospital Director and Hospital Administrative Assistant to develop and distribute staff communications memos and updates.
  • Collaborate with the Hospital Director to assure goals and objectives of the hospital are being met or exceeded.
  • Lead or actively participate in monthly medical staff meetings and attend all required staff and leadership meetings providing follow-up documentation as needed.
  • Develop implement maintain and evaluate SOPs to support efficient and effective workflows accurate medical record keeping and consistent operational standards across the hospital.
  • Perform daily reconciliation to ensure daily sales match banking statements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Prior experience in a shelter or fast-paced hospital a plus

Requirements
  • Able to react to change productively
  • Daytime availability Monday through Friday
  • Reliable transportation including during inclement weather
  • Able to work in a high volume fast-paced high-stress environment
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Successful completion of a background check


Physical Job Requirements

  • Able to lift 40-50 lbs.
  • Able to work around animals (including those who are sick or injured or who have behavior challenges) loud noises cat litter animal waste and various chemicals
  • Able to bend and use your arms in a repetitive manner
  • Able to kneel and stoop
  • Willing and able to work in all weather conditions


Work Environment

  • Rapid pace with exposure to potential hazards including animal waste and disinfectants
  • High levels of noise
  • Potential for animal bites and scratches and diseases that are zoonotic (can be transmitted from animals to people)

Richmond SPCA employees are eligible to become clients of our low-cost full-service Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital and have access to an Employee Assistance Program.
