Program Overview Management Child Care & Family Services
This position is accountable to the Vice-President Child Care & Family Services for supporting the operation of the Child Care & Family Services conjunction with the Senior Manager Child Care this position will ensure that the staff recruitment retention and professional development objectives of the unit are achieved. Completion of the initial onboarding documentation for casual staff will remain the responsibility of the Senior Manager. The services provided by this position include: recruitment orientation and ongoing supervision of casual staff; supporting labour relations with casual staff; developing and maintaining appropriate systems for casual staff evaluations and professional development; enhancing WoodGreens position as an Employer of Choice.

The Manager of Practice is responsible for centralized management functions including casual staff recruitment mentoring orientation retention performance evaluation and professional growth; ensuring compliance with organizational policies.

What You Will Do
  • Participate in the recruitment and hiring of casual staff including screening interviewing and follow-up.
  • Provide input/insight into the hiring process when casual staff apply for full-time positions.
  • Develop and implement Child Care Unit specific orientation process for newly hired staff both casual and full-time. Areas of focus would include program expectations program planning incident report writing review units policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the Child Care & Family Services unit management team to ensure orderly development of the unit and the integration of casual staff and co-ordinate consistent on-site expectations for casual staff.
  • Develop and implement an annual goal-setting monitoring and evaluation system for casual staff to ensure a consistent process for all casuals with the support of the child care centre managers. This would be accomplished through observing performance during site visits and conducting regular check-in meetings (at least once/quarter).
  • Maintain written reports/checklists/assessment on the casual staffs progress with the goal of mentoring coaching and ensuring two-way communication to upgrade skills to fulfil the responsibilities of the position and support them to progress to full-time staff positions.
  • Provide guidance and support for casual staff related to all child care unit policies with a focus on child development milestones positive behaviour practices and effective teaching strategies. Ensure policies are reviewed on an annual basis and monitor casual staff compliance.
  • Support professional development for casual staff through developing and delivering training modules to support the learning goals of the group to enable them to transition to full time staff positions.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with colleges/universities to support staff recruitment in conjunction with P&C e.g. attending job fairs.
  • Create and lead casual staff network and develop strategies for ongoing communication with casual staff to share resources such as articles webinars and newsletters.
  • Participate in any disciplinary and/or supervisory meetings related to casual staff along with the Senior Manager Child Care.
  • Ensures the anti-racism objectives and the community development principles of the organization are understood and achieved by the casual staff.
  • Responsible for abiding by all guidelines/regulations and ensuring that the program practices used by casual staff are consistent with the Child Care Early Years Act 2014 City of Torontos Assessment for Quality Improvement (AQI) Toronto Public Health and WoodGreen policies.

What You Bring to the Team
  • Early Childhood Education Diploma.
  • 5 years experience working with children aged infants to preschool and their families. Minimum of 2 years management experience including supervisory experience within a unionized environment.
  • Knowledge of: policies and procedures related to the operation of a child care centre; child guidance techniques; child development; standard methods of behavioural observation
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • Registered Early Childhood Educator

  • Additional relevant training an asset e.g. Post-diploma in Child Care Management/Supervision; Child Studies; B.A.A. Early Childhood.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct instruct and care for children.
  • Ability to handle emergencies crises and hostile behaviour.

  • Ability to use professional judgement on a daily basis within guidelines established by the Provincial Child Care and Early Years Act 2014 City of Toronto Quality Assessment for Improvement (AQI) and program policies. Responsible for finding solutions consulting/reporting only in unusual situations.
  • Ability to provide work direction to staff.
  • Ability to accommodate competing demands.
  • Ability to maintain neat and accurate records and prepare and present report.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with children parents staff teachers the public outside agencies funders regulators.
  • Responsible for confidentiality of all information related to children parents staff.
