Job Summary

POSITION DETAILS

Summary:

The School Nurse provides professional nursing care to students and staff during the school day promoting health safety and academic success. This role includes managing acute illnesses and injuries supporting students with chronic health conditions and collaborating with school staff families and healthcare providers to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Student Health Care

  • Assess and provide care for acute illnesses and injuries including first aid emergency response and triage
  • Monitor manage and support students with chronic medical conditions (e.g. asthma diabetes seizure disorders cardiac conditions allergies)
  • Implement and maintain individualized healthcare plans (IHPs) and emergency action plans
  • Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders and district policy
  • Monitor students for changes in condition and determine need for dismissal or emergency services

Health Monitoring & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate confidential student health records
  • Document visits treatments medications and incidents in accordance with school and legal requirements
  • Track and follow up on health screenings referrals and parent communications

Emergency Preparedness

  • Respond to medical emergencies and coordinate care until EMS arrival when needed
  • Participate in emergency planning including AED CPR and emergency response protocols
  • Assist with staff education related to student health needs and emergency procedures
  • Collaboration & Communication
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student health concerns
  • Collaborate with administrators teachers counselors and support staff
  • Serve as a health resource for staff regarding student medical needs and accommodations

Health Promotion

  • Provide health education and guidance to students and staff as appropriate
  • Support attendance by addressing health barriers to learning
  • Promote a safe and healthy school environment
  • Adhere to all district health and safety policies including all precaution protocols
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings workshops or trainings
  • Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment:

  • Office environment.
  • Constant interruptions.
  • Excessive intermittent noise.
  • May be required to respond to emergency calls in the case of catastrophic events.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to physically perform tasks associated with the job description including but not limited to abilities to stoop bend sit stand stretch grasp push pull walk lift up to 35lbs.
  • Commute between assigned buildings with a valid MI drivers license and reliable mode of transportation.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to see hear and move intermittently or use prosthetics that will enable to function adequately to ensure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education & Experience:

  • Current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Michigan RN preferred.
  • Previous experience in acute care emergency care or similar fast-paced clinical setting
  • Minimum Associates degree
  • Current CPR/AED certification ability to obtain upon hire
  • Knowledge of the health needs of the school-age student.

Preferred Education & Experience:

  • Experience working with school age children staff and parents/guardians.
  • Current CPR/AED Instructor certification

Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient in a variety of current technologies and office software ( Infinite Campus and Google Suite).
  • Efficient and accurate word processing and keyboarding skills.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with minimum supervision including developing and implementing effective nursing procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information (medical and personal information).
  • Ability to keep numerical records and compile reports.
  • Ability to relate to students with respect compassion tact and understanding.
  • Ability to establish effective rapport with students and maintain effective working relationships with administrators teachers parents and other staff members.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Part-time hourly non-exempt position hired through EDUStaff.
