The Public Information Intern(s) will work directly with the Deputy Public Information Officer in the City Managers Office to understand public policy strategic and crisis communications organizational branding and storytelling departmental collaboration and public engagement.
While this internship is unpaid students will benefit from practical in-field experience in a government setting working directly with senior staff and department leaders. Interns will apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects assist in strategic initiatives and build a network of professional references and portfolio-ready work.
This opportunity is ideal for fulfilling academic internship hour requirements capstone projects portfolio work or related field experience for resume building.
Duties & Responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities/Program Highlights
- Independently produce social media videos and still photography with subject matter experts and of City projects and department staff and events including police and fire
- Create social media graphics flyers and other digital public facing communications using Canva
- Produce short form video deliverables and provide in-field photography
- Craft media releases social media posts and website copy adhering to AP style
- Assist with the Citys July 4th parade fireworks display and picnic to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Americas Independence and the Citys 100th anniversary
- Assist with the Citys Centennial including volunteer registration event coordination social media and other public messaging or initiatives
- Experience City Council meetings to gain a better understanding of policy and operations
- Shadow the Public Information Officer(s) and learn about public communications
- May also assist with the planning execution or communications of City events and employee recognitions
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid State Drivers License Required
- Currently enrolled college student (undergraduate/graduate/technical or vocational). Preferred majors/concentrations include Journalism Marketing Mass Communications Professional Writing Public Affairs Business or Public Administration
- High School student enrolled in On the Job Training (OJT) program or dual enrollment may also apply.
- Knowledge to successfully fulfill the duties and responsibilities listed above as this position will require a strong work ethic desire to learn collaboration and creativity.
- Familiarity with AP style social media platforms photography and video editing is preferred.
