Job Summary

Description

The Integrated Data Science Laboratory for Metabolomics and Exposomics (IDSL-ME) is seeking a highly skilled Senior Scientist to manage and lead high-impact research initiatives in metabolomics and exposomics. The IDSL-ME laboratory is at the forefront of biomedical research focusing on the development of next-generation knowledgebases and computational approaches to study environmental exposures (exposomics) and their impact on human health.

In this pivotal role the Senior Scientist will lead the granular analysis of complex metabolomics and exposomics datasets derived from large-scale patient cohorts with a specific research focus on Cancer Neurodevelopment and Alzheimers disease. The position requires deep expertise in metabolic network analysis employing reaction-based and pathway-based algorithms to interpret multi-omics data. The Senior Scientist will act as a strategic technical lead architecting analytical frameworks that bridge internal research at Mount Sinai with data from external consortia across the USA and abroad. The Senior Scientist will also play a key role in securing extramural funding mentoring junior staff and disseminating findings through peer-reviewed publications.

Responsibilities

Large-Scale Exposomics & Metabolomics in Disease Cohorts (25%): The Senior Scientist will lead the computational analysis of high-dimensional metabolomics and exposomics data from large-scale human cohorts. This involves designing and implementing statistical and machine learning workflows to identify environmental and metabolic biomarkers associated with Cancer Neurodevelopmental disorders and Alzheimers disease. The Scientist will be responsible for processing raw mass spectrometry data and translating it into biological insights that elucidate the mechanisms of disease progression in these specific pathologies.

Metabolic Network Analysis & Multi-Omics Integration (20%) The Senior Scientist will perform advanced Metabolic Network Analysis utilizing reactions metabolic pathways and gene-protein-reaction associations to model cellular metabolism. This includes 1) Developing and deploying pipelines for the integration of multi-omics data (transcriptomics proteomics and metabolomics). 2) Mapping experimental data onto genome-scale metabolic networks to simulate flux and pathway activity. 3) Identifying dysregulated metabolic reactions that are dysregulated and environmental exposures and may also serve as potential therapeutic targets for immune and neurodegenerative conditions.

Strategic Collaboration & External Partnerships (15%) The Senior Scientist will serve as a primary liaison for collaborative research initiatives. This includes facilitating data sharing and joint analysis with internal departments at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and external research organizations and consortia within the USA and abroad. The Scientist will harmonize disparate datasets across institutions to ensure interoperability and robust statistical power for large cohort studies.

Implementation of AI-Agents & Large Language Models (15%) Leveraging state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence the Senior Scientist will oversee the development of AI-Agents using Large Language Models to accelerate literature mining and hypothesis generation. These agents will be deployed to extract structured information (chemical structures reaction pathways disease associations) from scientific literature supporting the labs focus on drug repurposing and mechanism discovery.

Mass Spectrometry Informatics & Knowledge Graph Construction (15%) The Senior Scientist will manage the architecture of scientific databases that house critical metabolomics and exposomics datasets. Responsibilities include designing schemas for structured and non-structured databases and applying chemometric principles to annotate unknown compounds. The Scientist will utilize spectral similarity algorithms to enhance the identification of metabolites in complex biological matrices.

Leadership Mentorship and Funding (10%) The Senior Scientist will take a lead role in securing research funding by conceptualizing and writing grant proposals (e.g. NIH NSF). The Scientist will provide technical mentorship to postdoctoral fellows and graduate students ensuring best practices in software engineering and data stewardship (FAIR principles). Additionally the Scientist will serve as a lead author on peer-reviewed manuscripts.

Qualifications
  • Ph.D in sciences or related field
  • Minimum five years of experience with scientific investigation.
  • Must have demonstrated outstanding achievement in a field of research
  • Must have contributed to a number of peer-reviewed publications inventions or the like at least some of which have had a major impact on advancing the field or discipline.
  • Prior experience successfully securing external grant funding is highly desirable.

Preferred Skills

  • Education: Ph.D. in Biotechnology Computational Biology Systems Biology Bioinformatics or a closely related technical field.

  • Experience: A minimum of five (5) to six (6) years of postdoctoral or specialized research experience following the completion of the Ph.D..

  • Technical Expertise:Proven expertise in modeling metabolic networks using reactions pathways and constraint-based modeling techniques and metabolic network analysis using Cytoscape. Demonstrated experience developing pipelines to integrate metabolomics with transcriptomics or proteomics data.

  • Disease-specific application: Experience applying systems biology approaches to complex diseases such as Cancer Immune disorders or infectious diseases with transferable skills to Neurodevelopment/Alzheimers.

  • Programming: Proficiency in Python and R for large-scale data analysis and visualization.

  • Publication Record: Strong record of first or corresponding author publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Compensation Statement

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $58661.00 - $125008.22 salaries depend on a variety of factors including experience education and operational need.
