The Prosthetic or Orthotic Resident is responsible for providing quality prosthetic care to West Park Healthcare Centre and Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB) clients under the supervision of Certified Prosthetists or Orthotists while pursuing continuous professional development towards Certification.
Duties:
- Prosthetic Resident: Assess and treat patients with partial or total absence of a limb by evaluating designing fabricating fitting and aligning artificial limbs known as prostheses under the supervision of Certified Prosthetists.
- Orthotic Resident: Assess and treat patients with neurological/muscular and/or skeletal disorders by evaluating designing fabricating fitting and aligning braces known as orthoses under the supervision of Certified Orthotists.
- Maintain a safe working environment and wear appropriate PPE when using machinery chemicals or when in contact with patients on precautions or with wounds.
- Provide education and training to patients their families and team members on the safe use and care of prostheses or orthoses including how to clean and care for the limb and the assistive device.
- Provide client follow-up care for prosthetic or orthotic patients such as referral to the Ambulatory Clinic for medical concerns.
- Prescribe appropriate device designs/componentry in line with assessment results patient goals and funding limitations.
- Direct and work closely with technical staff providing specific details as to the fabrication of each prosthesis / orthosis verbally and in writing.
- Verify that the fabrication of the prosthesis / orthosis has been done correctly and verify that each device is safe for patient use.
- Repair and service devices as necessary often on an urgent basis.
- Be aware of conditions and measures that may affect the safety of patients residents students employees volunteers physicians and visitors including:
- Compliance with the safety standards of the hospital and applicable legislation
- Identification and prevention of safety issues and problems
- Taking corrective action where possible
- Attendance at safety meetings/training/updates in accordance with the Centres standards
- Complete timely accurate and thorough clinical documentation for every client visit including additional documentation required by insurance bodies.
- Complete accurate clinical workload documentation on a daily basis.
- Produce detailed cost estimates for devices.
- Ensure accurate and timely billing of devices by working closely with office staff.
- Manage component warranty servicing programs as necessary.
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and ambulatory clinics.
- Develop future cost of care estimates for insurance bodies.
- Pursue continuous professional development as required by Orthotics Prosthetics Canada.
- Train in and be aware of new technologies products and fitting modalities continually.
- Work in a manner that exemplifies UHNs core values
- Participate in Centre-wide events and programs as appropriate.
- Participate in team and/or Centre-wide committees as appropriate.
- Assist in promotion of the department as directed by manager including tours and presentations for staff students UHN foundation and external bodies (ie. WSIB).
- Perform any other duties that are deemed relevant to the position at the managers request.
- Maintain good performance history and attendance record.
Qualifications :
- Graduate of a recognized post-graduate clinical prosthetic and orthotic program
- Prosthetist or Certified Orthotist training through accredited program of study
- Member in good standing of OPC
- Eligible for Authorizer status for the Assistive Devices Program for Conventional and Externally Powered Limb Prostheses or Orthotic Devices
- Membership in the Ontario Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists (OAPO)
- Member of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO)
- Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team
- Basic computer skills
- Demonstrated ability to meet production timelines
- Evidence of commitment to continuous education
- Fully versed in both clinical and technical methods of fabricating and fitting devices
- Well-developed clinical problem solving skills
- Well-developed technical hand skills
- Experience with microprocessor and myoelectric prostheses considered an asset
- Experience working with computerized assisted design (CADCAM)/ 3D printers considered an asset
