Job Summary

The Journeyman Electrician safety and efficiently within their scope of expertise installs maintains services and repairs  plant equipment used within the operation of the Swan Hills Treatment Centre (SHTC).  The Incumbent follows all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and permitting requirements while achieving target KPIs.  KPIs include safety productivity and quality of work performed.  The Journeyman Electrician may be requested to mentor and train an assigned Apprentice(s) as well as oversee work performance of any Maintenance Technicians assisting with a work order or assist other tradespeople in the performance of their work.  The Incumbent is required to work rotating day shifts.

This position operates within a COR ISO 17025 certified and OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 conforming plant environment and is expected to comply with all regulatory requirements.  The facility operates on a 24/7 basis

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The duties of the Journeyman Electrician are as follows but not limited to:

  1. Understands and promotes the Companys the Divisions the Plants and the Departments mission statement values and strategic goals.
  2. Proactively promotes through example a safe work ethic attitude and workplace.  Complies with all health and safety policies standards and procedures to achieve a safe work environment and safety for all staff and visitors as well as the Companys Clients and Regulatory Agencies safe work objectives and requirements.
  3. Maintains effective working relationships and communications with peers management and other Company departments and staff.   Effectively resolves any conflicts in a timely and respectful manner to achieve positive and healthy working relationships and workplace environment.
  4. Promotes a quality-first work ethic and attitude to provide a service of the highest standard achievable.
  5. Maintains confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.
  6. Safely operates company owned leased or rented vehicles and/or mobile equipment .  Incumbent is required to perform Safety Sensitive duties and responsibilities.  
  7. Participates in shutdown and start-up planning. 
  8. Participates in Hazops PHAs and RCM analysis. 
  9. Conducts equipment checks and preventative maintenance on plant equipment.
  10. Installs new electrical equipment. 
  11. Conducts work on high voltage switch gear and other motor control centers including troubleshooting skills.
  12. Conducts work on or repair variable frequency drives and D.C. Drives.
  13. Provides technical assistance in the electrical area to aid others in the performance of their duties.
  14. Performs all daily regulatory preventative maintenance work is accurately and properly documented to meet the expectation of the plant operating approval.
  15. Assists in the maintenance of equipment historical records and documentation of equipment change and modifications.
  16. Refers to applicable drawings when required.  Verifies that field changes are redlined onto drawings through the Draftsperson. Does not use drawings that are unauthorized or out of date.
  17. Provides technical assistance in the area of Instrumentation to aid others in the performance of their duties.
  18. Assists other trades in the performance of their work as required due to the size of the facility. 
  19. Mentors newer tradespeople and apprentices.
  20. Supports other initiatives of the Plant to promote a healthy and positive work environment and enhance employee morale and engagement.
  21. Completes other duties as assigned.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY (EH&S)

  1. Understands and is accountable for responsibilities as Journeyman Electrician as described in Sections 2-2 and 3-2 of the Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Act the Swan Hills Treatment Centre Safety manual EH&S Management System documentation and other relevant policies.
  2. Conducts a Safe Work Plan (SWP) review prior to any non-routine and critical activities. Documents and maintains a record of the meeting. Verifies that all involved in a SWP understand the risks and signs the document prior to starting the job. 
  3. Acts upon in a timely manner any unsafe conditions observed.
  4. Performs work only where competence is met.
  5. Reports all out of the ordinary external communication to their Supervisor or Manager.
  6. Produces legible and identifiable records and documents. Prevents production of unauthorized copies of documentation.  Consults with the responsible Manager on replacement of lost or damaged documentation.
  7. Participates in pre-approved training to advance skills and competence.
  8. Reviews critical procedures as assigned by Supervisor or Manager.
  9. Understands role in an emergency.
  10. Reports all incidents non- conformances near misses concerns and potential legal non-compliances immediately to their Supervisor or Manager.
  11. Cooperates with auditors to facilitate successful audits. 
  12. Maintains a safe and clean workplace at all times.

Qualifications :

  • Apprenticeship Certification and/or an inter-provincial Journeyman ElectricianTrade Certificate.
  • Applicable Experience Required:
  • Minimum of 4 years related-industry experience and completion of apprenticeship certification.
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is a definte asset.
  • Previous experience in an industrial process plant environment is an asset.

Special Training/Certificates Required:

  • In-house training on the quality systems quality regulations and safe work practices (including WHMIS).
  • In-house training on Corporate policies.
  • Respectful Workplace Training.

  • Effective customer service attitude and commitment to providing exceptional customer service and quality results.
  • Effective interpersonal and conflict management skills to facilitate working effectively with wide range and number of people including peers and manager employees and other departments divisions and management within all levels of the organization.

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proven organizational and creative-problem solving skills.
  • Intermediate level computer skills to operate MS Office Suite (especially Outlook Excel and Word). 
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills are required.
  • Ability to work on-call and outside of regular business hours as the facility is operational 24/7.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality to comply with regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.
  • Ability to complete all conditions of employment including criminal record check negative alcohol and drug test current and clean Class 5 drivers license pre-employment medical and background check.  

HOURS OF WORK (The hours during which duties are being performed and Incumbent is expected to work to meet operational requirements.)

The Journeyman Electrician will follow a compressed work week; 40 hours per week. The shift cycle is 4 days on 3 off either Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday.  Scheduled hours of work for the 10-hour shifts are 7:00 am to 5:30 pm with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.  Incumbent may be required to work overtime as authorized.

Incumbent may occasionally be requested to change/adapt their hours to meet operational requirements and coverage.

Physical or mental demands and activities:

  • Incumbent performs Safety Sensitive duties or responsibilities.
  • Position has been classified as a Security Sensitive position in accordance with company policy.
  • Continually managing priorities to meet operational objectives.
  • Achieving expected performance standards while maintaining an efficient and safe working environment.
  • High volume workload requiring both sound technical knowledge and ability to provide exceptional customer service.

Challenging conditions normally associated with job (e.g. physical hazards rotating shifts shop conditions excessive travel as an integral part of the duties performed etc.).  It is assumed that all reasonable and legal Occupational Health & Safety practices are in place and are adhered to.   In addition PPE is to be worn as per company standards and procedures.  Refer to the safety section and safe work plan sections of procedures for specific information.  Refer to the positions Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) for the correlation or activity risk and controls.

  • Works directly in the production plant; required to climb ladders work at heights or in confined spaces and be exposed to various industrial hazards within OH&S Guidelines such as but not limited to noise fumes chemicals and biological and hazardous waste.  
  • Exposed to PCBs Compressed/flammable gas mobile equipment moving equipment rotating equipment and electrical hazards.
  • Exposure to hot and cold environments.
  • Required to wear respirator and/or breathing apparatus while in designated areas of the plant and/or laboratory.
  • Despite the relatively low risk of exposure to potential waste contaminants participation in the SHTC employee health monitoring program is required.
  • Some periodic heavy lifting may be required.
