Position Summary
The Controller will oversee all accounting fund reporting and financial operations for AREY Group and its affiliated entities. This role is responsible for the financial and accounting integrity compliance investor reporting and transaction execution across development acquisitions and the operating assets. The Controller will bring experience in multifamily real estate including acquisitions development and property management and will play a central role in scaling the accounting function of the organization in a disciplined and sustainable manner in cross collaboration with other departments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Department Leadership Team Management Operational Ownership
- Lead mentor and develop the accounting team establishing clear expectations accountability and professional growth opportunities
- Oversee day to day accounting operations to ensure accuracy timeliness and adherence to internal controls.
- Partner with executive leadership to improve processes enhance reporting capabilities and scale systems to support future fund growth
2. Financial Reporting Compliance & Controls
- Oversee preparation of monthly quarterly and annual close processes financial reviews and financial statements consolidated reporting and cash flow forecasts.
- Review and validate property management ancillary asset management development and acquisition fee calculations in accordance with governing agreements.
- Directly manage relationships with external auditors tax advisors and banking institutions.
- Manage bank account structures and financing logistics in coordination with lenders and financial institutions.
- Maintain handson familiarity with underlying schedules reconciliations and supporting documentation.
- Oversees preparation of the annual CAM Reconciliations for all commercial tenants and condominium associations.
- Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and mitigate risk.
- Approve and oversee critical financial decisions including defined workflow expenditures and payment workflows
- Oversee development draw processes to ensure timely funding and vendor payments.
- Review and approve disbursements wire transfers and funding requests.
- Serve as back up to VP of Operations on administration oversight of insurance partners
- Provide financial analysis and reporting to senior management to support their strategic decision making
3. Investor Relations & Capital Support
- Partner closely with the CIO on capital raises acquisitions and development initiatives to ensure these get pulling into the Accounting and Finance function smoothly
- Own financial disclosures tax coordination and distribution accuracy.
- Coordinate and ensure all investor and lender reporting is accurate timely and supported by consistent processes with the Investment team.
- Assist in investor communications as needed with clarity around Controller vs. CIO responsibilities.
- Support fundraising efforts to help explain process and controls in place as needed.
- Maintain inventory and visibility into guarantees covenants lender requirements and longterm obligations.
4. Audit and Tax
- Manage the preparation of federal and state tax returns in coordination with external accounting firms
- Lead coordination of annual tax audits as required
5. Accounting Operations
- Oversee accounts payable accounts receivable and annual 1099 reporting
- Ensure internal controls and accounting procedures are operating effectively.
- Identify and resolve complex accounting issues as they arise.
Systems & Innovation
Evaluate implement and optimize financial systems and platforms with the Investment and Operations Departments (e.g. RealPage AppFolio).
Ensure system implementations of the departments are grounded in actual workflow understanding and practical execution.
- Leverage data and dashboards to drive insight into portfolio performance operational efficiency and financial trends.
- Champion continuous improvement through automation standardization and data integrity.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Proven multifamily real estate accounting and financial leadership experience and team building
- Strong understanding of accounting systems controls and compliance
- Ability to operate both strategically and tactically
- Experience scaling accounting finance teams and systems
- Comfort operating in a handson environment during growth phases
- CPA strongly preferred
Compensation and Benefits
- Base salary range: $165000 to $200000
- Target bonus opportunity: 20-30%
