Job Summary

NYC Parks is transforming what was once the worlds largest landfill into a sweeping 2200 acre park in one of the most ambitious public works projects in the history of New York City. Freshkills Park combines state-of-the-art ecological restoration techniques and research on urban ecology with extraordinary settings for recreation public art education and scientific research.

Major Responsibilities

-Under general supervision with latitude for independent initiative and judgment perform responsible work in community programming and perform assigned tasks to provide necessary community and outreach services.
-Create facilitate and promote programs for the general public including educational activities kayaking photography birding and group/public tours.
-Assist in administrative and organizational support for the Freshkills Park office and Freshkills Park Visitor Center.
-Collaborate with partner agencies organizations and community groups.
-Assist in facility and park operations and interact with visitors.
-Assist in organizing and conducting public/special events at Freshkills Park including races sporting events arts events and festivals.
-Facilitate the development of content for blog posts/social media and other communications.
-Assist in scheduling outreach school trips and specialty events.

Qualifications :

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 or 2 above. However all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in 1 above.
