The purpose of this internship is to provide participants with a similar experience to that of an entry level police officer.Interns will be introduced and familiarized to the various components of law enforcement and their specific roles in the criminal justice system.The internship will focus primarily on the duties and tasks of patrol officers with a supplemental exposure to criminal investigations and community relations.

OUR CITY
The City of Auburn is home to over 80000 residents and encompasses over 29.8 square miles of land two rivers and is part of two counties - King and Pierce. The City operates as a Strong-Mayor form of Mayor-Council government with a City Council of seven at-large members. Auburn is also home to hundreds of businesses - ranging from manufacturing to retail.

OUR POLICE DEPARTMENT
The Auburn Police Department is committed to building a positive proactive partnership with the citizens of Auburn and strives to be a premier law enforcement agency that is trusted supported and respected. The department is comprised of 150 staff to include: Chief of Police Assistant Chief (5) Commanders (13) Sergeants (108) Officers/Detectives (18) Non-Commissioned staff a Crime Analyst and (3) Administrative Assistants.

Primary Duties

Interns will directly observe the daily activities carried out by officers such as incident response investigation training warrant service arrest and courtroom testimony.Daily tasks and duties will be assigned to interns that mimic the responsibilities of the officers they observe providing real life experience in the field.All tasks and assignments are designed to help create a foundation for those interested in a career in the law enforcement profession specifically policing.

Interns may be provided the opportunity to work in criminal investigations where they may be assigned tasks to assist detectives with ongoing investigations. Interns will also be introduced to the community relations aspect of law enforcement and the importance of building trust with those the police serve.

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for this internship opportunity you must be:

  • Pursuing an Associates or Bachelors degree in criminal justice psychology law forensics public safety political science homeland security or a related field; or have obtained one in the last 12 months. AND
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid drivers license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must submit to fingerprinting.
  • Must have an acceptable background with no felony convictions serious misdemeanors and or drug history.
To be the most successful this employee should possess good communication research analytical organizational time management and public relations skills.

We are asking for a commitment through our 10-week program from June 15th - August 21st. Preference will be given to candidates that are available to work up to 40 hours per week throughout the program. If you are a top candidate your availability and assigned schedule will be discussed with you before moving into the background check process.

Our core business hours are Monday - Friday 8am to 5pm with an hour for lunch. We are physically in the office every day and you may have an assigned desk with a City issued computer! This position is not eligible for remote work so you must be able to commit to being onsite to be considered for this role.

The pay rates for this position will be offered as follows:

Freshman & Sophomores: Step 1 - $20.00

Juniors & Seniors: Step 2 - $21.58

Postgraduates: Step 3 - $23.15
