About the Position

The Bank Street School for Children is seeking a strategic thought leader with strong relational skills and proven expertise in student learning diversity and research-based instructional practices to serve as Director of Learning and Student Support. This essential organizational leader will design and implement the schools approach to serving our diverse community of learners. The Director sits on the schools leadership team and collaborates with divisional leaders to guide and implement programs and goals that support age-appropriate curriculum development and further build faculty members content knowledge instructional practices and home-school relationships all in support of each childs social emotional cognitive and physical development. The Director supervises the Learning Specialists Mental Health team members and the Literacy Specialist across the school oversees the network of related services providers and NYC Public Schools partners and serves as the point-person for the school-wide Student Support Team.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Strategic Planning

  • Serve as a member of the schools leadership team collaborating with divisional leaders on school-wide initiatives
  • Participate in weekly School Leadership team meetings
  • Participate in bi-weekly Childrens Programs Leadership meetings to build community and a shared understanding of leading for equity
  • Plan and facilitate bi-weekly Student Support Team meetings in collaboration with the Head of School Director of DEI and divisional leaders
  • Envision and refine a comprehensive system of mental health supports and restorative justice behavioral frameworks
  • Oversee data collection and analysis to monitor student progress identify trends and inform targeted interventions
  • Further embed research-based academic practices across the school using authentic assessment data to achieve greater equity of learning outcomes

Supervision and Team Management

  • Supervise the Mental Health team members to ensure staff and families are best positioned to support healthy student development
  • Supervise the Learning and Literacy Specialists to strengthen coaching partnership and faculty development for differentiated instruction intervention and assessment systems
  • Supervise the support and development of Associate Teachers in classrooms serving children ages 3-10 including the August AT Training Day and ongoing cohort meetings in collaboration with the Lower School Division Head and Associate Division Head
  • Organize the work of Learning Specialists to support the schools partnership with NYC Public Schools regarding related services providers

Curriculum Development and Instructional Support

  • Partner with divisional leaders and faculty in documenting and augmenting key areas of curriculum for increased coherence within and across grade levels including leading school-wide reviews of literacy math and social studies
  • Provide professional learning opportunities and support to faculty regarding deepened content differentiation and instructional practices
  • Develop and lead professional learning opportunities aligned with school goals
  • Maintain a consistent presence in classrooms to support classroom teachers and specialists provide coaching and model effective instruction
  • Manage the professional learning budget and make recommendations on outside learning opportunities for staff in collaboration with the leadership team

Student Support and Intervention

  • Collaborate on and lead small instructional groups as needed
  • Partner with Lower and Upper School leaders Math Literacy and Learning Specialists Mental Health Team members and Classroom Teachers to review and manage the internal Kid Meeting structure to ensure each groups and childs needs are known and being addressed
  • Partner with Lower and Upper School leaders in meeting with parents and teachers to discuss interventions and supports for students requiring deeper learning supports as needed
  • Collaborate with divisional leaders to create seamless transitions for students and families across ages and divisions especially for students with diverse learning needs and specialized supports

Family and Community Partnership

  • Partner with Lower and Upper School leaders Math Literacy and Learning Specialists and Classroom Teachers to continuously refine parent communication in the form of parent-teacher conferences and reports
  • Collaborate with Math Literacy and Learning Specialists and Classroom Teachers to plan and implement parent education events such as Math and Literacy Nights
  • Engage and support the parent affinity group Learning Diversity Resource Group in collaboration with the school leadership team
  • Participate in the admissions process as needed including admissions committees and open house presentations

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Desired Qualifications and Skill Sets

  • Masters degree in Education or a related field
  • At least five years of teaching experience at the PreK8 level
  • Multiple years of experience as a learning specialist and/or special educator
  • Prior leadership experience whether at the school leadership level or in leading a team of faculty
  • Experience as a supervisor
  • Experience supporting diverse learners and their families
  • Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to social justice and equity including an ability to reflect on and articulate ones racial identity development
  • Deep knowledge of commitment to and experience with progressive education and schooling
  • A successful track record supporting adult growth and development preferably in the role of team leader instructional coach assistant principal/head or the equivalent
  • Broad and deep experience in curriculum development
  • Ability to resolve conflict in a productive manner
  • Strong written and oral communication interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Warmth humor flexibility and optimism
