What We Do
The Public Works Department provides a variety of services related to the development construction inspection improvement and maintenance of the Citys infrastructure. This infrastructure includes traffic lights sidewalks streetlights and addition Public Works runs the following enterprise operations: Water Solid Waste Wastewater Stormwater and Parking Operations.

Who Were Looking For
The City of Beverly Hills is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Solid Waste Equipment Operator I or Solid Waste Equipment Operator II (dependent on qualifications) to operate solid waste collection vehicles and heavy equipment on assigned routes. The incumbent of this position will perform collection of residential refuse which includes solid waste mixed recycling and organics (food and yard waste) and perform heavy manual labor involved with alley maintenance and bulky item pick-ups.

Distinguishing Characteristics
Solid Waste Equipment Operator I - This is the entry level class in the technical Solid Waste Equipment Operator series. Incumbents in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience. Incumbents receive on-the-job training in the safe and efficient operation of various solid waste collection vehicles and equipment that are used in all of the Citys collection routes. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned. Incumbents will perform the full range of duties after they complete the training period.

Solid Waste Equipment Operator II - This is the journey level class in the technical Solid Waste Equipment Operator series and is distinguished from the Solid Waste Equipment Operator I by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new unusual or unique situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Employees at this level assist with the training of their peers and lower classes in the series in various solid waste collection activities and operations. Employees at this level are cross trained in street sweeping operations and serve as a relief operator when needed. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from a Solid Waste Equipment Operator I based on a satisfactory performance evaluation four years of related experience and a forklift operator certificate.

The Solid Waste Equipment Operator I and II classifications are distinguished from the Senior Solid Waste Equipment Operator in that the latter assists the supervisor in leading training and evaluating staff assisting with the development and implementation of performance standards and assisting with the conduct of field audits for quality control.

Solid Waste Equipment Operator I: $64931.91 - $80441.65 Annually
Solid Waste Equipment Operator II: $68246.33 - $84546.03 Annually

Eligibility List
The candidates who successfully pass the selection process will earn placement on an Eligibility List. The Eligibility List may be used for current and future vacancies in the job classification as defined by the duration of the list at the time the list is established. The Eligibility List established for any recruitment may also be used to fill a lower-level position.


Additional Requirement
As set forth by the Department of Transportation Regulation 49 Part 382 finalist(s) will be subject to a pre-employment medical screening for alcohol and controlled substances. Finalist(s) will also be required to provide written consent for the City of Beverly Hills to obtain drug and alcohol testing records from all employers within the last two (2) years.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Solid Waste Equipment Operator I
  • Experience: No experience required. One year of experience driving and operating equipment in the collection of solid waste and recycling materials is desirable.
  • Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License and Certificate
  • Possession of a valid California Commercial Class B drivers license without air brake restrictions and a California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) medical certificate dated within the last two (2) years.
  • Possession of a forklift certificate or ability to obtain within three (3) months of appointment.
Solid Waste Equipment Operator II
In addition to the qualifications for the Solid Waste Equipment Operator I:
  • Experience:Four years of experiencein the collection of solid waste and recycling materials.
  • Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License and Certificate
  • Possession of a valid California Commercial Class B drivers license without air brake restrictions and a California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) medical certificate dated within the last two years.
  • Possession of a forklift certificate.
