About the Department - Facilities Management
Mount Royal Universitys Facilities Management department is responsible for the planning development construction design operation maintenance safety security and stewardship of all the buildings infrastructure sites and services within Mount Royals campus community. Through efficient and environmentally sustainable operation we offer grounds custodial building operations facilities planning security services and engineering professional services to provide a physical environment that supports and enhances our academic space for students and staff. About the Role
Reporting to the Supervisor Electrical the Electrician performs work essential to the ongoing operation and maintenance of the Universitys electrical building systems and equipment. Work is performed under minimal supervision.
This position is a part of the MRSA Collective Bargaining Unit. The normal shift is usually Monday to Friday 7am-3pm however transfer to other shifts with notice is a possibility. Overtime may be required and the incumbent might be expected to be on Standby. Callouts to the campus can be expected during emergencies.
The Electrician functions within applicable legislation regulations policies guidelines and standards.
This position is a permanent full-time role working 37.5 hours per week.
Responsibilities
Responsibility 1 (40%): Support of Electrical Systems and Equipment
- Responds to emergent and urgent issues assesses and repairs electrical building systems and equipment connected to the low voltage electrical distribution system (up to 600VAC);
- Completes electrical work requests as assigned by the Supervisor;
- Troubleshoots the operation and functionality of electrical systems and equipment and performs maintenance in accordance with industry best practices guidelines and standards;
- Installs new electrical equipment including conduit and associated fittings when required;
- Replaces deteriorated or obsolete electrical equipment and repairs equipment having residual life with new parts as required;
- Provides Fire Alarm system support and bypass as required;
- Reads and interprets drawings specifications circuit diagrams and electrical code regulations;
- Notifies the Supervisor of unusual electrical conditions and recommends corrective actions;
- Provides electrical services associated with University events as required;
- Displays initiative judgement and personal direction when carrying out responsibilities as work is performed under minimal supervision;
- This position must be able to coordinate work with other trades as necessary prioritize and respond to work orders appropriately anticipate potential issues and provide solutions within established standards and procedures to avoid problems and delays in relation to services provided.
Responsibility 2 (40%): Preventative Maintenance Program
- Performs preventative maintenance inspections and repairs as per assigned schedules;
- Assists with Electrical Authority monthly on-site inspections and correcting deficiencies;
- Supports leadership and colleagues in determining preventative maintenance schedules and procedures as per manufacturers recommendations industry best practices guidelines and standards.
Responsibility 3 (20%): Support of Facilities Management
- Under direction of the Supervisor supports the project management department in scoping electrical work for potential projects and future capital planning upgrades;
- Investigates the impact and necessary procedures to safely shut-down/start-up electrical systems for the project management department contractors and/or co-workers;
- Performs data collection on electrical building systems and equipment to support asset management;
- Supports maintaining single line diagrams master drawings and panel schedules;
- Participates in the effective use of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (Archibus) in completing work requests and preventative maintenance assigned work.
Qualifications
- Electrician Journeyperson Certificate and/or a Red Seal Endorsement issued in Alberta with 5-8 years experience
- A valid Fire Alarm Technician Certificate would be an asset
- Master Electrician Certificate would be an asset
- Demonstrated experience in commercial industrial and institutional electrical applications;
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with building electrical system practices techniques tools test equipment and safety procedures (including Arcflash awareness and protection and conducting Field Level Hazard Assessments FLHAs) associated with the electrical trade;
- Knowledge in the installation maintenance and operation of the following systems: 120/208 277/480 347/600 volt power distribution; lighting and lighting control; emergency power systems; motor and motor control; heating and cooling control; variable frequency drives and soft start motor starters; troubleshooting repair and retrofitting of electrical systems;
- Electrical building codes and regulations including CSA Standards (Z462 & Z463) Canadian Electrical Code standard OHSA WHMIS etc;
- Relevant information and tracking systems and business productivity tools (e.g. Microsoft Office internet tablets mobile phones);
- Provide customer service according to university and departmental standards and expectations by pleasantly and respectfully interacting with co-workers supervisors contractors consultants suppliers students and other members of the University community and evaluating customer satisfaction;
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints schematic diagrams shop drawings specifications and maintenance manuals is required;
- Plan prioritize and coordinate multiple activities under time pressures;
- Demonstrate initiative sound judgment flexibility creativity and attention to detail and accuracy;
- Demonstrate commitment to confidentiality tact diplomacy client service and continuous improvement.
Salary: $69498.00 - $87964.50 per annum
