JOB DESCRIPTION: Summer Grounds Care Worker

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • The Grounds Care Working is responsible for providing ground maintenance at assigned site/s; ensuring attractive and safe grounds area/s and athletic fields; protecting against erosion; performing a variety of special grounds maintenance operations; and maintaining grounds for assemblies events and/or recreational activities.
  • The Summer Ground Crew Worker is a seasonal position. Typically Summer Grounds Crew runs from the middle of May to the end of September.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Grounds Care Worker:

  1. Assists in in the application of chemicals for the purpose of controlling insects and weeds in accordance with established procedures. *
  2. Maintains school lawns by irrigating mowing edging trimming fertilizing overseeding and using weed control methods; prepares areas for seed or sod and sows seed. *
  1. Cleans landscaped areas and related items (e.g. storm drains fields litter parking lots etc.) for the purpose of preventing flooding and removing hazards. *
  1. Maintains job related grounds keeping equipment for the purpose of ensuring for the availability of equipment in a safe operating condition. *
  1. Plants a variety of landscaping materials (e.g. lawns shrubbery flowers etc.) for the purpose of keeping the grounds attractive and protecting against erosion. *
  1. Prepares grounds and athletic fields for the purpose of providing adequate attractive and safe areas for assemblies recreational activities and/or athletic events. *
  1. Repairs irrigation systems and components (e.g. valves wiring timers switches etc.) for the purpose of ensuring equipment and/or components are in proper working order. *
  1. Requests materials supplies equipment and/or support personnel for the purpose of completing assignments in a timely manner. *
  1. Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage vandalism alarms etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action or notifying appropriate personnel for resolution. *
  1. Transports a variety of tools equipment supplies etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required at job site. *
  1. Assists the maintenance personnel in moving of school equipment and supplies. *
  1. Follows the policies and procedures of the school and the District. *
  1. Demonstrates a sense of professional responsibility such as demonstrating ethical behavior; providing accurate data and reports when needed; meeting deadlines; maintaining confidentiality; caring for the equipment and materials; and dressing appropriately and presenting a good role model. *

SKILLS KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of and ability to operate all mechanized equipment necessary for duties such as bobcats roto-tillers chainsaws trimmers herbicide/pesticide sprayers aerators overseeders lawn sweepers sod cutters and pickup trucks; knowledge of and ability to repair and maintain different types of irrigation systems; ability to use various types of specialized hand tools knowledge of diesel and gas-operated power equipment; basic math skills to determine application rates for spraying herbicides and pesticides; ability to follow written and oral instructions; and ability to work well with various types of personnel.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High school diploma GED or equivalent or combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.

Work Experience: None although one year is preferable.

- Strength: to lift push pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 50-100 pounds on a frequent basis.

- Mental Requirements: read write understand interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; and give verbal instruction.

- Additional Work Conditions and Physical Abilities: Require travel to multiple sites.

- Evaluation of this position shall be by the Lead Ground Worker.
