CORONER ASSISTANT DEPUTY DIRECTOR

Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above based on position requirements and successful candidates qualifications subject to appropriate authorization.

RECRUITMENT / POSITION INFORMATION
This recruitment is being held to establish an Agency Promotional eligible list to fill current and future vacancies in this class within the Orange County Sheriffs Department until the next recruitment. The eligible list established may also be used to fill positions in similar/or lower classifications.

THE DIVISION
The Coroner Division is an investigative unit responsible for carrying out the statutory duties of the Coroner. Those duties include investigation into the circumstances surrounding all deaths falling within the Coroners jurisdiction for the purpose of determining the cause manner and time of death. Medicolegal death investigations are conducted county-wide on all homicides suicides accidents suspicious and unexplained deaths. Other duties include establishing the identity of the decedent notification of the next of kin safeguarding personal property and completion of mandatory records.

THE OPPORTUNITY
The Sheriffs Department is currently looking for a forward-focused leader dedicated to planning developing and implementing management strategies to support public safety needs. Also responsible for the planning organizing implementing and coordinating of all Department protocols and procedures to be used for both day-to-day operations and in case of emergency.

DUTIES

  • Manage daily operations of the units within the Coroner Division
  • Attend briefings and assist in triaging incoming cases
  • Review pending cases prior to amending death certificates
  • Complete employee evaluations
  • Work with Forensic Pathologists regarding caseload
  • Manage supervisory level subordinate staff
  • Complete PRA requests and redactions when necessary
  • Attend Board of Supervisors meetings when required
  • Manage division contracts and budgets
  • Manage the Investigative Units Field Training Program
  • Manage the P.O.S.T training contract
  • Develop policies and procedures
  • Run recruitments to fill vacant positions
  • Chair various death review committees
  • Attend professional meetings representing the division
  • Prepare various reports for the public internal and external stakeholders and public officials
  • Participate in interagency and community engagement events

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will possess two (2) years of experience as a Supervising Deputy Coroner in the Coroner Division; thorough understanding of concepts related to medicolegal death investigation thorough understanding of all applicable laws governing the Coroner Division; completion of P.O.S.T. Management school within the first year of appointment. Additionally his/her expertise would be demonstrated by the following competencies:

  • Possession of the required education license(s) and/or certifications associated with the assignment

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Two (2) years of experience as a Supervising Deputy Coroner in the Coroner Division or its equivalent with the County of Orange.
Or
Five (5) years of professional operational experience related to assignment; must include two (2) years of lead/supervisory experience.

A Bachelors degree in criminal justice business or public administration biological sciences or related area may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

A Masters degree or higher in criminal justice business or public administration biological sciences or related area may substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.

License/Certification
Assignment requires the following licenses or certifications by date of appointment:

  • Must possess and maintain a current and valid California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Certificate or a valid California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Specialized Basic certificate
  • Possession of a valid California Drivers license Class C or higher

Physical and Mental Requirements
Possess vision sufficient to read standard text and a computer monitor and to drive a vehicle; speak and hear well enough to communicate clearly and understandably in person to individuals and groups and over the telephone; possess body mobility to stand sit walk stoop and bend routinely to perform daily tasks and to access a standard office environment; possess manual dexterity sufficient to use hands arms and shoulders repetitively to operate a keyboard utilize office equipment and to write and drive; use a County approved means of transportation. Ability to work under stressful conditions deadlines and competing priorities.

Environmental and Working Conditions
Possess the ability to independently reason logically to analyze data reach conclusions and make recommendations; possess the ability to remain calm and appropriately focused in rapidly changing and difficult situations involving conflict complex issues controversy and diverse stakeholder groups and interests; possess the ability to deal calmly and effectively with emotional interactions.
