The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of WisconsinMilwaukee invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professorbeginning August 2026. Appointments are based on exceptional teaching and researchin abstract algebra and/ a 9-month appointment withan initial1-yearterminal contractwhichpending satisfactory performancecan be reissuedannually fora total of three years.

TheDepartment of Mathematical Sciencessupports a vibrant collegial and inclusive community of teachers scholars and students offeringbachelors degrees in mathematics statistics data science applied mathematics & computer science and actuarial science as well asMasters and Doctoraldegrees in mathematics. The department playsa central rolein fulfilling UWMs mission of high-quality education and research serving a broad population of students across STEM business education and interdisciplinary programs.

Doctoral education in mathematics at UWM promotes research excellence and student mentorship contributing to the universitys status as a leading urban research Departmentis committed to excellence in researchteachingand more informationabout the Department of Mathematical Sciences visit: successful candidate will:

  • Make meaningful contributions to the departments undergraduate teaching mission by teaching lower-division courses each semester and when needed selected upper-division or graduate courses at the discretion of the department chair.

  • Teach a 23 load in the first year (typically 6 credits in one semester and 9 in the other) followed by a 33 load insubsequentyears (typically 9 credits persemester).

  • Pursuean active research program with the support of a departmental research mentor.

  • Participate in departmental service activities that support undergraduate education.

Key Job Responsibilities:

Compensation: $65000 - $70000

(Final salary offer will be determined based on qualifications and experience)

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants must already be in possession of a PhD degree or obtain their PhD byAugust24 2026.

  • Research background in abstract algebra and/or combinatorics.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstratedexcellencein teaching at the undergraduate level.

  • Strongevidenceforsustainedand independentresearch productivity
