With over 130 years of experience navigating in some of the worlds most complex and difficult waters Seaspan Marine Transportation is the largest and most diverse tug & barge company on Canadas West Coast providing more than 2500 ship assist and escort services annually while our fleet of over 100 specialty and general-purpose barges provide critical transportation for many of BCs largest industries and major marine construction projects.
The HSEQ Intern supports the Health Safety Environment and Quality (HSEQ) team in maintaining compliance strengthening safety culture and improving business processes across marine operations. Working under the guidance of Safety Coordinators and the HSEQ Business Process Analyst the intern assists with contractor management systems digital safety platforms documentation reviews and continuous improvement initiatives. This role provides hands-on exposure to regulatory compliance marine safety practices and enterprise HSEQ systems used across the fleet and shore-based operations.
This position supports all the Seaspan Marine Group including Tug and Barge Marine Petrobulk Ferries and HaiSea Marine providing broad exposure and diverse learning opportunities.
Note: Due to business needs this position is required to be fully on-site based at 10 Pemberton Avenue North Vancouver.
What youll do
General HSEQ Support
Assist with the preparation review and distribution of safety communications alerts and bulletins
Help maintain organized HSEQ records dashboards and performance metrics
Support internal audits inspections and compliance checks across marine operations
Contribute to safety meetings (e.g. JOHS Committee meeting) toolbox talks and new employees orientation as appropriate
Participate in continuous improvement projects related to safety culture environmental stewardship and quality assurance
Conduct regular safety walkthroughs at docks terminals and other marine worksites to identify hazards observe work practices and support compliance with Seaspans Safety Management System (SMS)
Participate in ride-alongs on vessels to observe onboard operations engage with crews and gather feedback related to safety culture risk controls and improvement opportunities
Document observations positive practices and areas for improvement escalating concerns to the Safety Coordinators or line manager as appropriate
Support follow-up actions ensuring that feedback loops are closed and learnings are shared with relevant teams
Contractor Management & ISNetworld Support
Understudy the Safety Coordinator responsible for ISNetworld administration
Obtain and maintain appropriate user access to the ISNetworld platform
Conduct routine reviews of Seaspans documentation status on the portal (e.g. insurance safety programs statistics)
Identify gaps expired documents or non-conformances and flag them for review
Supplier Portal Oversight
Understudy the Safety Coordinators managing the Seaspan Supplier Portal
Perform regular checks on supplier documentation ensuring alignment with company requirements and marine safety standards
Escalate issues to the line manager including:
o Expired or missing documents
o Misalignment between supplier activities and their registration
o Safety Management System (SMS) concerns
o Any anomalies requiring follow-up
Digital HSEQ Systems (Intelex & Compass)
Understudy the HSEQ Business Process Analyst to gain proficiency in Intelex and Compass
Assist with data entry workflow reviews and system maintenance tasks
Support to ensure compliance with incident reporting corrective actions audits inspection drills etc. modules
Participate in system improvement initiatives and user support activities
What youll bring
Currently enrolled in Occupational Health & Safety Environmental Science Marine Studies/Nautical Science Business Process Management Engineering or a related technical field
Comfortable learning new software platforms and digital workflows
Strong attention to detail when reviewing documentation and data
Ability to analyze information and identify inconsistencies or gaps
High proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel Word PowerPoint)
Clear professional communication skills both written and verbal
Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams including operations dispatch logistics personnel management and vessel crews
Confidence in escalating issues appropriately and respectfully

We require a full-time commitment Monday-Friday 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $26.00/hour.
