Description of Work

The North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) is designated as an emergency response Division and is a team of professionals who provide forest protection resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs. The NCFS provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina.

The District Equipment Supervisor manages the shop area supervises and schedules maintenance and repair of fire control equipment. Position maintains parts inventory & provides technical oversight for work performed in the shop. Will be responsible for determining the priority and the extent of major repair work to be done on various light and heavy equipment. Light equipment includes pumps generators chainsaws UTVs and other small engines. These repairs may be made in fire line or field environment or in shop. Maintains and repairs heavy equipment such as dozers graders dump trucks farm tractors and road tractors. Also trouble shoots complex mechanical problems including diesel engines gasoline engines transmissions final drives hydraulics brakes and undercarriage problems. Position will need to use and comprehend repair manuals schematics computers databases and other computer programs. May also provide welding torch cutting and metal fabrication as needed. District Equipment Supervisor is responsible for state inspections on vehicles and adhering to OSHA requirements.

Environmental exposures are adverse weather forest pests hunters intense heat dust and smoke. Work hours are typically 8-5 Mon-Fri. Some work functions require evening holiday and/or weekend work. Wildfire & disaster/emergency response functions require readiness 24/7. May be a member of incident management team requiring response to incidents away from home and for extended periods of time.

Some overnight travel required for emergency response and/or training.

A skills test related to the knowledge skills and abilities will be administered during the interview.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Recruitment Range: $39244 - $68679

  • Knowledge of the operating principles and maintenance of gas-powered internal combustion engines.

  • Knowledge of the undercarriage of dozers and other tracked equipment.

  • Experience diagnosing operating defects in automotive equipment and determine the type and extent of repairs needed.

  • Experience using mechanical electrical and computer systems including databases spreadsheets and email.

  • Ability to do heavy lifting and pulling when required as related to mechanical duties.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment or a sufficient year-for- year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I II III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82 subpart F.

Employee must operate a state vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Drivers License.

Either possession of a current Commercial Drivers License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Drivers License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training or employer sponsored training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
