Our team currently includes one multi-skilled machinist specializing in designing and machining rocket engines. Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled professional to serve as a Multi-Skilled Machinist Assembly Integration Technician (AIT) and Machine Shop Lead supporting Exos Aerospaces mission including a critical 1-year program for the U.S. Air Force/Space Force.
The ideal candidate is a high-functioning machinist with expertise in CNC lathes and mills proficiency in SolidWorks and CAM/CAD software and experience in aviation or aerospace instrumentation.
This role complements our existing machinists focus on rocket engine design and fabrication by providing leadership for broader machine shop operations and supporting assembly integration and testing (AIT) of rocket-powered vehicles including orbital transfer vehicles.
Immediate priorities include machining parts for a Space Force Hover vehicle to prove a flight-weight RDRE engine with responsibilities evolving over the program duration.
Key Responsibilities
Machining and Fabrication: Immediately prioritize machining parts for a Space Force Hover vehicle to prove a flight-weight RDRE engine as part of the 1-year program for the U.S. Air Force/Space Force. Operate and program CNC lathes and mills to fabricate precision components for rocket vehicles including components for integrated pressurized structures and Type 5 tank technologies used in orbital transfer vehicles complementing the existing machinists focus on rocket engine design and production. Ensure adherence to tight tolerances and aerospace standards. Responsibilities will evolve as the program progresses.
Assembly Integration and Testing (AIT): Assemble integrate and test rocket-powered vehicles and orbital transfer vehicles for Exos Aerospace ensuring systems meet safety and performance requirements.
Instrumentation and Calibration: Install calibrate and troubleshoot aviation/aerospace instruments sensors and control systems critical to vehicle operations including those used in suborbital and orbital applications.
Machine Shop Leadership: Conduct daily operations of the machine shop including defining equipment maintenance processes workflow optimization and quality control while collaborating closely with the existing rocket engine specialist.
Business Development: Leverage existing customer relationships to expand the machine shops services supporting Exos Aerospaces needs and serving select external clients.
Design and Programming: Utilize SolidWorks and CAM/CAD software to design parts generate toolpaths and optimize machining processes for efficiency and precision coordinating with the existing machinist on rocket engine designs and supporting designs for Type 5 tank technologies and integrated pressurized structures as needed.
Operational Support: Assist in vehicle testing launch preparations and post-test analysis including simulations and troubleshooting for suborbital and orbital systems.
Quality Assurance: Inspect parts and assemblies using precision tools (e.g. micrometers calipers CMM) to ensure compliance with blueprints schematics and GD&T specifications.
Collaboration: Work closely with Exos Aerospace engineering teams and the existing machinist to refine part designs troubleshoot issues and implement process improvements in a multi-disciplinary setting.
Safety and Compliance: Maintain a safe organized workspace adhering to protocols for handling hazardous materials (e.g. LOX ethanol) and complying with FAA NASA and AS9100 standards.
Documentation: Record procedures test results and maintenance activities to meet regulatory and quality requirements.
Required Qualifications
Technical certification associate degree or equivalent in machining aerospace technology or a related field
5 years of experience as a machinist in aerospace aviation or high-precision manufacturing
Advanced proficiency with CNC lathes and mills including programming setup and operation of multi-axis machines
Expertise in SolidWorks and CAM/CAD software
Experience in assembly integration and testing (AIT) of complex mechanical or aerospace systems
Knowledge of aviation/aerospace instrumentation including wiring sensor calibration and diagnostic tools
Proven mechanical aptitude with hands-on troubleshooting and electromechanical system experience
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
Strong leadership skills with experience managing or supervising shop operations
Excellent problem-solving communication and teamwork skills
Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs stand for extended periods and work in a shop environment
Preferred Skills
Welding certification (TIG MIG) with aerospace application experience
Experience managing a machine shop including budgeting and customer relations
Established industry relationships
Familiarity with rocket propulsion systems or suborbital vehicles
Experience with cryogenics and fuels handling (LOX ethanol)
Experience with Mori Seiki NLX 2500SY and bar feeder systems
Knowledge of AS9100 or ISO 9001
Startup or high-growth aerospace experience
