Why its a great opportunity: The Pierce County Summer Internship Program is back! This year our program will run from 6/8/2026 through 8/28/2026. We are excited to offer opportunities that provide realistic and meaningful work experiences while providing Pierce County Departments with interns who bring fresh perspectives and support to complete special projects. Interns are a part of a cohort that attend weekly activities together. These sessions include classes project planning and tours of various departments and facilities to learn about the County and the types of great job opportunities we offer. As a cohort you will be responsible for a culminating group presentation before the Pierce County Council.

Why its a great department:The Finance Department delivers enterprise-wide services that support every County department and many external partners ensuring Pierce County operates effectively efficiently and with strong public stewardship. Finance staff provide a broad portfolio of high-impact countywide services including budgeting and performance management fiscal services procurement and contracting information technology general services fleet services and risk management.

About the internship:For this role you should be an intern with a strong desire to work in automotive repair and fleet maintenance. The desire to learn be self-motivated inquisitive and greatly expand your knowledge will be the best approach. This will be much more than basic maintenance with a full bumper to bumper approach.

You will work one on one with several highly skilled automotive technicians providing mentorship feedback and guidance. You will learn the proper use of tools knowledge and computer systems in areas such as gas and diesel engines brake systems electrical systems suspension/steering systems HVAC systems operations diagnosis and repairs. You will learn how and why safety around cars tools and potentially hazardous materials is so important.

Core daily responsibilities:

  • Work with a mentor one on one while being inquisitive and knowing your own limitations.
  • Hands-on engagement of all areas of the industry.
  • Assist in diagnostic maintenance repair and equipment installations.
  • Assist in computer system updates for work orders maintenance tracking and diagnostics.
  • Determine priority of work based on the work to be done.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A cover letter isrequiredfor consideration.Without one you will not be considered.
  • Must be local 6/8/2026 8/28/2026 to attend in-person cohort meetings activities and any work-related tasks.
  • Must be at least 18 years old as of 6/8/2026.
  • Current or past education in automotive trades.
  • Proficiency with computers and good computer skills.
  • Proficiency with basic hand tools.
  • All tools will be provided for the intern. You will not need to bring your own.

As a condition of employment the applicant will need to authorize and complete a background check. Information received from the background check is reviewed case-by-case and will not necessarily remove an applicant from consideration.
