Summary/Objective

Responsible for inspection of existing structures and new construction. Duties include inspections related to building electrical mechanical and plumbing systems to assist in ensuring the safety and health of the citizens of Manhattan. This position primarily focuses on inspections and plan review related to the issuance of a permit to ensure compliance with the applicable codes regulations and ordinances.


Essential Functions

Performs commercial and residential inspections; maintains reports.

  • Performs inspections of new construction and existing structures under a wide variety of site conditions and environmental factors for assurance of compliance with applicable codes regulations and ordinances.
  • Inspects existing buildings and premises for change of use occupancy or compliance with applicable codes regulations and ordinances.
  • Contributes to the health safety and welfare of the general public by conducting existing housing and nuisance inspections to ensure compliance with adopted codes and ordinances.

Studies and interprets code and construction-related regulations; conducts code enforcement actions as required.

  • Examines plans and specifications of new construction additions and alterations to residential and commercial buildings to determine compliance with applicable codes regulations and ordinances.
  • Effectively communicates both orally and in writing code compliance requirements to appropriate design and/or construction personnel owners and other appropriate persons.
  • Interprets codes and determines compliance/non-compliance in specific situations.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records on computer databases to provide for inspections compliance/enforcement of codes documentation of violations and repairs and analysis.
  • Initiates and conducts code enforcement actions in accordance with guidelines up to and including writing citations and legal actions.

Performs additional duties as required.

  • Attends meetings and trainings as required.
  • Participates in and delivers in-service training and public education programs.
  • Assists with damage assessment and initial response after widespread disasters.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations policies and procedures in all duties.
Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma GED or equivalent.
  • 2 years of experience in building construction or equivalent
  • Valid drivers license.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • ICC Certification as a Residential Building Inspector (required within 1 year of hire)
  • Experience conducting building inspections.
