The Edmonton Police Services (EPS) has an immediate opening for one (1) individual to conduct forensic examination and identification of firearms ammunition and any related components firearms parts and accessories. - Maintaining continuity of exhibits for examination and court purposes.
- Examining firearms and ammunition parts and accessories to determine legal classification mechanical condition and functionality.
- Preparing a Certificate of Analysis notes photographs and other related reports for disclosure to court.
- Ability to attend and testify in court as an expert witness.
- Test fire firearms and recover samples of fired casings for acquisition into the Integrated Ballistic Identification System (IBIS) system with the Brasstrax instrument.
- Triage crime scene fired cartridge casings for source determination.
- Conduct correlation reviews of cartridge components with the MatchPoint instrument.
- Ensuring safety procedures are followed with respect to the handling of firearms biohazard materials chemicals solvents and other potential hazards.
- Performing serial number restoration.
- Conducting routine verification preventive maintenance repairs and/or troubleshooting of the following: IBIS system firearms standard collection and the ammunition standard collection and the firing range.
- Collaborating with both internal and external partners as it relates to on-going investigations.
- Assisting when required in the retrieval and transport of property/evidence.
- Assisting in weekly lead mitigation cleaning procedures.
- Successfully pass a yearly proficiency examination
- Performing other related duties as required.

- Completion of a Bachelors degree in Science Forensic Science Engineering or related degree and a minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience. OR Completion of a two (2) year diploma in civil drafting or related technology at a recognized institute of technology and four (4) years of relevant experience. Experience in firearms repair maintenance modification and training. Master Firearms Instructor Certification (or ability to obtain). The following specialized armourer and instructor certification (or ability to obtain): Glock ; Colt ; Heckler and Koch ; Arwen ; Remington.
- Successful completion of the requirements set out in accordance with the National Quality Assurance Program in the use of the Integrated Ballistic Identification System instrument.
- Certification from a recognized Firearms Analyst program.
- Completion of the Public Agents Firearm Verification course with demonstrated use of the Firearms Reference Table.
- Hold a valid Firearms Possession and Acquisition Licence.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of forensic science and laboratory operations.
- Ability to acquire traditional forensics from exhibits.
- Understanding and ability to recognize impression evidence.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of law enforcement.
- Practical knowledge of Canadian Firearm laws.
- Experience in handling criminal evidence.
- Knowledge of the design construction and safe operation of firearms and the various types of ammunition
- Knowledge of modern laboratory methods procedures and equipment related to firearm examination. Including but not limited to Serial Number restoration drop testing trigger pull analysis.
- Experience producing comprehensive technical reports for investigators and courts.
- Knowledge and experience working within a Laboratory Information Management System would be an asset.
- Knowledge of Privately Manufactured Firearms would be an asset.
- Knowledge of 3D additive printing would be an asset.
- Air gun testing and calculations.
- Ability to perform the physical demands of this position.
- Demonstrated history of providing excellent customer service and ability to deal with a high case load.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
- Must possess a valid Class 5 Alberta Drivers License and valid for five (5) years. Must complete a City Drivers License application. Must also have access to own vehicle and provide written proof of current public liability and property damage insurance to a minimum of $1000000. If applicable must provide out of province drivers license. EPS will reimburse mileage for any private vehicle usage during assigned duties. Client transportation is not required.
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week Monday - Friday. Hours of work may be subject to the terms and conditions of a variable hours of work program.
Salary Range: 21B Salary Grade: 027 $43.10 - $54.11(Hourly) $3448.20 - $3888.80 (Bi-Weekly) $89996.98 - $112987.94 (Annually)
