Clinical Internship at Canopy Mental Health & Consulting (MHC)
The Clinical Intern/Trainee provides outpatient mental health services under clinical supervision while completing degree requirements for a masters-level mental health program (i.e. Social Work or Clinical Counseling).
The clinical intern/clinical trainee gains hands-on experience in assessment diagnosis treatment planning and therapeutic interventions with diverse populations while adhering to ethical legal and organizational standards.
This internship is designed to support the clinical intern/clinical trainees professional development clinical competence and readiness for post-graduate licensure and employment.
Internship Details
Start Date: Fall 2026 with a August/September start date depending on your semester start date
Location: Telehealth with in office expectations at our two locations located at 6625 Lyndale Ave. Richfield MN 55423 and at 615 1st Avenue in Northeast Minneapolis MN 55413
Schedule: To be determined collaboratively based on clinic needs and academic requirements
Duration: Per academic program requirements - at minimal 16 hours and at maximum 20 hours per week
Reports To
Role and Responsibilities
- Clinical Services
- Conduct diagnostic assessments and risk assessments under supervision with children adolescents individuals couples and families
- Develop implement and update individualized treatment plans in collaboration with clients and supervisors
- Provide individual family couples and/or group therapy via in-person and telehealth as appropriate to training level
- Monitor client progress and adjust interventions as clinically indicated
- Provide crisis interventions and safety planning when necessary following clinic protocols and practices
- Documentation and Compliance
- Complete timely accurate and complaint clinical documentation in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) including:
- Intakes
- Diagnostic Assessments
- Progress notes
- Treatment plans
- Discharge summaries
- Ensure delivery of clinical services are being provided in accordance with agency policies professional and ethical guidelines.
- Adhere to HIPAA follow guidelines as governed by Minnesota state statutes insurance contracts and clinicians licensing board
- Adhere to ethical standards of the intern/clinical trainees professional board
- Supervision & Training
- Participate in required individual and/or group clinical supervision (1x a week individual and 1x week group consultation)
- Actively seek feedback and demonstrate integration of supervisory guidance
- Attend required trainings staff meetings and case consultations
- Engage in self-of-the-therapist reflection and professional growth activities
- Collaboration & Professional Conduct
- Collaborate and coordinate with multidisciplinary team members including therapists case managers psychiatrists and administrative staff
- Communicate professionally with referral sources schools probation child protection and other collateral contacts as appropriate and authorized
- Maintain professional boundaries and uphold clinic values and culture
- Learning Objectives
- Develop competency in outpatient clinical assessment and diagnosis - appropriate levels of care
- Strengthen therapeutic skills across diverse populations and presenting concerns

Required Qualifications:
- Current enrollment in a masters-level mental health program (MSW MA/MS Counseling)
- Internship eligibility as defined by academic program
- Ability to commit to required weekly hours and duration of the internship
- Basic knowledge of clinical theories ethics and practice
- Be able to conduct internship duties in-person and via telehealth
Preferred Qualifications:
- Interest in outpatient mental health and community-based services
- Experience or coursework related to trauma-informed care and a desire to work with marginalized and underserved populations
- Bilingual or multicultural experience (preferred not required)
