Job Summary

Performs mid-level work as a part-time Bus Driver for the City of Leander. The Bus Driver will drive a bus or van as a means of transportation for various City functions and groups including the Active Adult Programs. Generally this position uses routine skills and works under moderate supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

** Most trips are Friday Day Trips **

Essential Duties & Required Qualifications

  • Provide transportation to program participants to/from a variety of activities field trips projects programs and special events.
  • Assist the Active Adult Coordinator in supervising trips by communicating departure and arrival times to participants.
  • Assist passengers on and off the vehicle as needed. Assist passengers in loading and unloading.
  • Ensure the group stays together during outings assisting with participant check-ins and maintaining a headcount throughout the trip.
  • Collaborate with the Active Adult Coordinator to address any issues or concerns that arise during the trip providing support to maintain a smooth and enjoyable experience for all participants.
  • Check members in for the trip by highlighting their name on the roster when they board the vehicle ensuring accurate record-keeping and accountability for all participants.
  • Perform routine maintenance safety checks on vehicles and maintain a cleaning schedule for equipment and vehicles. Ensure the assigned vehicle is in safe operating condition at all times.
  • Coordinate mechanical repairs and inspection with a reputable service provider for the City van/bus when needed.
  • Perform routine inspections prior to each trip to provide a safe and healthy service to guests of the City of Leander.
  • Learn assigned transportation routes for each trip using internet sites and route maps. Ensure that participants reach their destinations in a timely manner.
  • May assist in maintaining order and resolving disputes documenting each situation for management.
  • Develop and maintain an Emergency Plan for unexpected events while on bus-related trips and be prepared with towing options if needed.
  • Occasionally assist with leading the bus-related events when other staff members are not available.
  • When requested provide support for the Recreation Team to include set up and tear down for events and opening/closing the Leander Activity Center.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Must meet the criteria of an acceptable driving record.
Required Certificate and Licenses
  • Current Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification card.
  • Valid Texas Class B Drivers License with Passenger Endorsement (or higher).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of one year of experience driving a bus for large groups.
  • Valid First Aid Certification or ability to get it within 90 days of employment.
  • Valid CPR/AED Certification or ability to get it within 90 days of employment.

  • Principles and practices of safe driving.
  • Exercising sound independent judgment within general policy guidelines.
  • Providing excellent customer service.
  • Must be able to maintain current required licenses certificates and medical certifications for drivers.
  • Establish a good working relationship with City employees and the general public.
  • Interact in a professional respectful and ethical manner at all times.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate with other employees and the general public in a courteous and diplomatic manner.
  • Analyze situations and adopt quick effect and reasonable courses of action.
  • Ability to work hours other than the regular daytime schedule such as special events on-call or emergency response situations.

Physical Demands & Additional Information

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand walk sit use hands to handle and feel items reach with hands and arms climb or balance stoop kneel talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision and ability to adjust focus.

Working Environment
While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but occasionally loud.
