The Calais School is a state-approved private special education school in Northern New Jersey serving students in grades K12 Plus with multiple learning disabilities anxiety mood and behavioral challenges and autism spectrum disorders.

We have an outstanding opportunity for a Special Education Teachere with experience in Animal-Assisted Therapy to support students social emotional and behavioral growth within a collaborative student-centered environment. This position can be full or part time.
- Assess students to evaluate their abilities strengths and weaknesses
- Teach students as an entire class or in small groups
- Grade students assignments to monitor progress
- Communicate with parents about students progress
- Work with individual students to challenge them to improve their abilities and to work on their weaknesses
- Prepare students for standardized tests required by the state
- Develop and enforce classroom rules
- Supervise students outside of the classroomfor example at lunchtime or during detention
Requirements
Skills and Knowledge:
- Valid New Jersey Teacher of the Handicapped License or Teacher of Students with Disabilities
- Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in special education
- Experienced with special needs students and their parents
- Demonstrated experience with Animal-Assisted Therapy.
- Effective communicator with strong oral and written skills that work with all audiences
- Demonstrate creativity flexibility and perseverance in dealing with challenging learning behavioral family and classroom situations
- Demonstrate ability to observe evaluate report and record students performance behavior social development and physical health
- Knowledge and demonstration of using innovative skills in instruction (analytical thinking problem-solving communicating collaborating and finding and evaluating information
- Evidence of self-motivation and willingness to be a team player
- Working knowledge of proactive communication with colleagues about scholar needs to ensure integrated support
- Maintain confidentiality
