JOB SUMMARY/ACCOUNTABILITY

The Senior Accountant reports to the Controller and plays a critical role in supporting the financial management of multiple program areas including Youth Services Adult Services Health and Seniors and other assigned grants and contracts. This position is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely grant accounting including monthly revenue recognition accounts receivable recording funder billings reconciliations and financial reporting in accordance with GAAP Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) and funder requirements.

The Senior Accountant serves as a key fiscal partner to Program Directors providing financial guidance monitoring budgets supporting audits and ensuring transparency and accountability for restricted funding.


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Grant and Program Accounting

  • Perform monthly grant accounting for assigned programs including accurate recording of revenue and accounts receivable based on allowable costs and grant agreements.
  • Prepare review and submit monthly quarterly and annual reimbursement billings to public and private funders.
  • Ensure timely recognition of grant revenue in accordance with GAAP and funder requirements.
  • Reconcile billed amounts to the general ledger and resolve variances promptly.
  • Track grant budgets expenditures and remaining balances; alert management to potential funding or compliance concerns.

Financial Reporting and Close Process

  • Prepare and post monthly journal entries including accruals allocations and grant-related entries.
  • Complete monthly reconciliations for assigned balance sheet accounts including accounts receivable and deferred revenue.
  • Assist with month-end quarter-end and year-end close processes.
  • Support preparation of financial statements and internal management reports.

Program and Departmental Support

  • Serve as the primary fiscal liaison to assigned Program Directors.
  • Respond to program inquiries related to budgets expenditures billing status and financial performance.
  • Assist programs with budget development modifications and forecasting as needed.

Compliance Audit and Controls

  • Ensure compliance with grant agreements Uniform Guidance and applicable federal state and local regulations.
  • Prepare schedules and documentation for internal and external audits including single audit support as assigned.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining strong internal controls and fiscal procedures.
  • Support implementation of new accounting policies systems and process improvements.

Other Responsibilities

  • Assist with special projects and analyses as assigned by the Controller.
  • Perform other accounting and fiscal duties as needed to support the mission of Matrix Human Services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or Business Administration with a strong emphasis in Accounting.
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in nonprofit accounting including grant and fund accounting.
  • Hands-on experience with monthly close processes journal entries and account reconciliations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in a nonprofit organization with multiple funding sources.
  • Knowledge of federal state and local government grants including reimbursement-based funding.
  • Familiarity with Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) and Head Start or similar human services programs.

WORKING AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Works in a normal office environment with usual pressures of managing personnel and dealing with time constraints. Because of multiple sites within the department and the need to meet with others within the community it is common to drive to several locations sometimes in inclement weather.
