The Wall Street Journal is seeking a senior manager to own and advance our newsrooms audience-data strategy. Reporting to the Head of Data and AI and serving as a leader on the newsroom digital strategy team this role defines how we measure success identify opportunity and translate audience data into actionable insight across coverage product and editorial strategy. You will set the direction for newsroom analytics and metrics ensuring editors journalists and leadership have the data-driven insights needed to support an audience-first newsroom.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You will operate at both the strategic level deciding what capabilities tools and models the newsroom needsand the execution level prioritizing team workloads reviewing analyses troubleshooting dashboards and guiding technical implementation. The role includes shaping and building advanced data capabilities including the use of machine learning and large language models to create informative practical tools for newsroom decisionmaking.
The ideal candidate brings experience in news media or a related field a deep understanding of audience behavior and strong empathy for newsroom workflows. You are an organized proactive leader who can manage teams set clear priorities and translate complex data into insights that drive real editorial and business impact.
You Will:
Lead and manage a team of audience data analysts and data scientists providing clear direction mentorship and technical guidance
Own the newsrooms audience data and analytics strategy identifying and prioritizing high-impact initiatives aligned with audience-first goals
Define build and maintain newsroom metrics dashboards and analytical frameworks
Partner closely with product audience and content teams within the newsroom digital strategy group
Collaborate with data analytics and engineering teams across Dow Jones
Drive the application of advanced analytics machine learning and LLM-based approaches where they meaningfully improve newsroom insight and decision-making
You Have:
Experience hiring mentoring and leading high-performing teams of data analysts and data scientists
Strong technical depth and the ability to operate as a subject-matter expert while leading strategy
Deep understanding of audience behavior and a strong sense of empathy for editorial teams and newsroom culture
A track record of building high-quality impactful data products in fast-paced deadline-driven environments
Experience creating project roadmaps prioritizing work and holding teams accountable for delivery
Hands-on experience with modern data and analytics tools including Python; cloud platforms such as AWS and Google Cloud; data warehouses such as BigQuery and Snowflake; BI and visualization tools such as Looker and Tableau; and data pipeline orchestration tools like DBT
Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to present clearly to senior leadership and document technical systems and projects
Strong project management skills and attention to detail
