Job Summary

Job Title: Bus Driver

Wage/Hour Status: Non Exempt

Reports to: Principal

Dept./School: As Assigned

Position Summary:

Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Operate a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from school or other designated locations in a timely and safe manner. Provide minor campus maintenance and facility support services as needed.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Valid Texas commercial drivers license (Class B) with School Bus Passenger Endorsement
  • Certified by the Texas Department of Public Safety; School Bus Driver Certification
  • Clean record of alcohol and drug use
  • Acceptable driving record as verified by the Texas Department of Public Safety annually

Experience

Previous experience working with school transportation (preferred)

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

Complete required bus driver safety training

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Demonstrate effective communicate skills

Knowledge of student discipline procedures

Manage student behavior that fosters safe bus operation

Ability to operate a bus safely and model safe bus driving practices

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Participate in staff development training programs faculty meetings and special events as assigned
  • Perform special projects during and after normal business hours and other duties as assigned
  • Complies with Federal and State Laws and local policies/procedures
  • Responds positively to supervision suggestions and/or directives. Uses evaluative feedback for improvement of performance
  • Participates actively in personal and /or professional growth and development
  • Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules
  • Drive to and from extracurricular activities as assigned
  • Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs
  • Ensure buses are clean and fueled
  • Assist with maintenance when necessary
  • Report all accidents vehicle damage student injuries and mechanical failure. Complete required reports
  • Keep record of bus mileage gas and oil consumption and number of passengers transported
  • Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street
  • Communicate with teachers and school administration as needed regarding student behavior while on bus
  • Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator
  • Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations
  • Exhibits a positive attitude and serves as a positive role model for students and the community
  • Works cooperatively and effectively with others
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  • Inspect bus by checking fuel oil water tires lights brakes and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving
  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment such as first aid kit fire extinguisher flags fuses crow bar and reflector
  • Operate two-way radio equipment and cellular phone to communicate with campus
  • Adhere to and enforce policies and procedures in the Heritage Academy Employee and Parent & Student Handbook
  • Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification status
  • Work irregular hours as needed
