Description

Position Objective: The Senior Virology Scientist will provide services in support of the overall functions of the Office of Chief Scientist - Integrated Research Facility (OCSIRF) within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The PI-1 Virology Core has the principal focus of developing and executing an independent research program that is focused on understanding aspects of viral infection replication or pathogenesis to support the mission of the IRF-Frederick and NIAID.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide research services to support animal studies at IRF-Frederick such as perform virology research that is focused on high-risk (BSL-3 and/or BSL-4) viral pathogens.
  • Perform research that takes advantage of IRF-Frederick resources to increase understanding of the pathogenesis of high consequence viruses to include the use of animal models.
  • Develop and assist the Federal Task Leader and other members with research projects and will work with and assist other staff.
  • Design develop and execute cutting edge virology research projects that utilize unique IRF-Frederick resources at the direction of the Federal Task Leader
  • Maintain good laboratory research documentation including laboratory notebooks (electronic or otherwise)
  • Maintain proper inventory of any virological agents and specialized reagents
  • Submit peer-reviewed publications preferably in high impact journals


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a PhD or similar from an accredited college or university with a focus on virology molecular biology cell biology immunology or a related field
  • Completion of a post-doctoral fellowship with a focus on virology
  • Extensive (>5 years) virology research experience with a focus on Risk Group 3 or 4 viruses.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills both oral and written.
  • Analytic organizational and time management skills.
