Job Summary

The High-Pressure Boiler Operator is responsible for the operation and preventative maintenance of the stationary boilers and the associated mechanical equipment. Ability to fire boilers and associated controls to assure the generation of a continuous supply of steam for heating Hospital buildings sterilizing equipment humidification and re heat application. Performs duties of a maintenance mechanic as needed. Other tasks as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor and or Director.

This position plays a critical role in supporting Augusta Healths mission and advancing departmental goals through measurable performance indicators and service excellence. This position contributes to a collaborative patient-centered environment and helps drive outcomes aligned with organizational priorities.

Essential Job Duties

  • Operates boilers and associated equipment safely and efficiently to generate steam. Ability to start and shut down High-Pressure Boilers routinely for maintenance and after utility interruptions.
  • Inspects cleans lubricates paints and repairs all mechanical equipment such as motors fans pumps valves compressors converters controls and boilers.
  • Performs preventative maintenance tasks as assigned through computerized maintenance program completes task as outlined enters clear/detailed results and accounts for time utilizing personal dashboards of maintenance program.
  • Makes chemical analysis or test of condensate water and adjust proper dosage to maintain efficient operations of the steam system and enters in log. Troubleshoot maintain and repair of water treatment systems.
  • Makes test of flu-gasses and temperature to indicate proper combustion and enters in log.
  • Tests and regenerates water softeners that supply water to all areas of the hospital complex and enter in log.
  • Works various scheduled / un-scheduled shifts when needed to maintain 24/7/365 coverage of the Powerhouse; including Nights Weekends and Holidays
  • Ability to instruct/teach others in a positive way on the various powerhouse and hospital campus boiler steam condensate and water treatment systems.
  • Maintains boiler room in a clean well painted well lighted safe and secure condition. Assists other trades in maintaining the cleanliness of the Boiler room; including removal of trash replacing lamps cleaning all floors stairwells and equipment spaces. Maintaining clear emergency exits isle ways and required clearance of electrical and operating equipment.
  • Ability to research plan coordinate and/or aid in scheduled and unscheduled steam condensate natural gas fuel oil and other system outages necessary for maintenance or repairs.
  • Follows all Hospital and Maintenance Department Policies and Procedures
  • Follows all Departmental Safety Procedures. Maintains all Assigned Safety Equipment in good working condition and always available for use when needed.
  • Ability to climb and work from ladders metal platforms scaffolds platform and aerial lift equipment.
  • Basic understanding of hospital Emergency Generator system including Generators monitoring system transfer switches and fuel oil supply.
  • Basic understanding of Hospital Chilled Water system including chillers chilled water pump cooling towers etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Licensure/Certification: Underground Storage Tank Operator Training Class B Operator designation recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia within 60 days of hire.
  • Experience:
    • Three to five years experience working as a Boiler plant operator attendant or equivalent role
  • Drivers License: Yes
    • To drive an Augusta Health Vehicle must also be 21 years old and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must be approved by Risk Management.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States and meet Virginia state employment requirements

  • Licensure/Certification: Boiler Room Operator or steam plant certification or equivalent
  • Experience: None
  • Prior experience in a hospital healthcare system or related service-oriented environment
  • Familiarity with Augusta Healths systems workflows or organizational culture is a plus

Competencies Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Works various scheduled/un-scheduled shifts when needed. Required to maintain 24/7/365 schedule.
  • Performs duties as a Maintenance Mechanic as needed.
  • Shows ability to manage time efficiently and complete work independently.
  • Completes Preventative Maintenance work orders daily enters time into computer maintenance program. Files any compliance required records in appropriate logbooks or files.
  • Ability to Fire and control boilers and associated equipment utilizing the appropriate control systems. Demonstrates the ability to reset and put boilers
    online after a power interruption.
  • Ability to appropriately shut a boiler and associated equipment down for routine maintenance or in an emergency.
  • Performs routine maintenance and blow downs of boilers as required.
  • Understands and operates the boiler system to maintain maximum boiler efficiency by reading adjusting and interrupting gages indicators control monitors and steam flow meters.
  • Complete understanding of the various boiler system controls and bypass valves. Demonstrates the ability to operate the control and bypass valves when required.
  • Complete understanding of fuel oil system. Understands how to and when to operate the boilers on fuel oil. Demonstrates the ability to perform this task.
  • Shows ability to troubleshoot maintain and repair components of all primary systems of the Boiler operating system.
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide the optimum water treatment for the Boiler systems including monitoring of the treatment and adjusting chemicals as required.
  • Troubleshooting and repairing water treatment system components.
  • Demonstrates the ability to troubleshoot maintain and repair components of the steam system including valves traps piping connections insulation etc.
  • Understands the condensate system for the boilers. Troubleshoot maintain and make necessary repairs to the condensate system.
  • Understand the steam and condensate systems through-out the hospital campus. Works with others to assist in the repair and troubleshooting of the various system components outside of the powerhouse when required.
  • Demonstrates the ability to teach and instruct others on the Boiler condensate and fuel oil systems piping valves controls and bypass procedures including the operation troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Demonstrates the ability to teach and instruct other staff members on the operation troubleshooting and maintenance of the various steam and condensate system components through-out the hospital campus.
  • Shows ability to maintain stock and order parts as needed. Acquires quotes from outside vendors and submits quotes to Supervisor.
  • Demonstrates the willingness to assist other trades (Plumbing Electrical HVAC etc.) with steam condensate fuel oil and other hospital operation systems.
  • Works with Engineering staff on troubleshooting maintenance and repair of small packaged boiler systems throughout the hospital and research buildings.
  • Assists construction trades on mechanical / utility systems related to Powerhouse systems operation.
  • Assist all other trades personnel in completing work tasks as assigned.
  • Demonstrates respect for others performs well independently and in a team environment.
  • Follow all Department Safety procedures. Utilize LOTO and wear appropriate PPE when required
  • Keep assigned areas and equipment maintained repaired and cleaned; keep shop areas clean and neat providing a safe work environment. Assist others in keeping work areas and equipment spaces neat and clean including removing trash and debris routinely.
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain the lighting in all equipment rooms public corridors restrooms stairwells and assigned building public and equipment spaces.
  • Maintain all personal safety equipment keep in good working condition and available to use at all times.
  • Research materials needed work with outside vendors. Ability to acquire and process orders for stock materials and/or materials for a specific project. Maintain an appropriate stock for specific trade of assignment.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
  • Work after normal hours (nights weekends & Holidays) when asked or required. Communicates any after hours or extra hours with Supervisor or Manager for approval.
  • Ability to self manage take imitative to get involved make repairs continue working even when a specific task has not been assigned.
  • Ability to be a self-starter self-motivated utilized self-confidence to try something new.
  • Willingly to share knowledge to teach and ability to listen and learn from others. Accepts responsibility for decisions made.
  • Ensures good rapport and cooperative working relationship with internal and external customers. Willingly do what is necessary to solve problems and provide optimum customer satisfaction.
  • Communicates effectively at least daily with Supervisor and personal at shift change. Provides complete and accurate turnover on shift report and to Supervisor or Manager. Communicates any equipment out of service with Supervisor or Manager immediately. Communicates and safety concerns or life safety issues immediately to Supervisor or Manager.
  • Arrives to work on time reports to assigned area and is ready to go to work at start of assigned shift.
  • Effectively manages PTO communicating with immediate Supervisor the need for time off in advance and using PTO; scheduled and unscheduled time off within the departmental guidelines.
