The Mechanic is responsible for maintaining troubleshooting and repairing mechanical systems and equipment used in TBM and tunneling operations. This role ensures that all machineryboth on the TBM and within the tunneloperates safely efficiently and with minimal downtime. The Mechanic works closely with supervisors engineers and equipment teams to perform inspections respond to breakdowns and support continuous tunneling progress.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintenance & Repairs
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on TBM mechanical systems including pumps grinders gearboxes hydraulic systems conveyors and rotating equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical faults and carry out repairs to restore equipment to full functionality.
- Respond to breakdowns quickly to minimize downtime and maintain production targets.
- Carry on the tasks dictated on the maintenance routine report it in the maintenance book or the electronic system provide for those tasks.
- Report to the Mechanical Foreman or the Plant Engineer in charge about whatever issue raised on the plant and equipment.
Troubleshooting
- Identify root causes of mechanical issues using diagnostic tools technical manuals and handson inspection.
- Work with fitters engineers and supervisors to implement longterm corrective actions.
- Adjust calibrate and finetune mechanical systems to ensure optimal performance.
Inspections & Monitoring
- Conduct routine inspections of TBM and tunnel equipment to identify wear leaks misalignment or potential failures.
- Monitor equipment performance and report abnormalities promptly.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections repairs and maintenance activities.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all safety procedures lockout/tagout protocols and tunneling best practices.
- Participate in daily safety briefings and ensure safe operation of tools and machinery.
- Maintain a clean organized and hazardfree work area.
Collaboration & Support
- Work closely with Mechanical Foremen TBM Operators Electricians and Fitters to support continuous tunneling operations.
- Assist with TBM maintenance during scheduled shutdowns cutterhead inspections and major mechanical interventions.
- Support shiftbased operations including nights and weekends as required.
Qualifications :
- Minimum 35 years of experience as a Mechanic Welder or Pipe Fitter in heavy industrial mining tunneling or construction environments.
- Trade certification or apprenticeship in a mechanical discipline (e.g. Heavy Equipment Technician Industrial Mechanic Millwright Welder) is an asset.
- Strong understanding of hydraulic systems rotating equipment pumps and heavy mechanical machinery.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings schematics and service manuals.
- Experience with TBM systems (EPB or slurry) will be mandatory
- Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work under pressure in a fastpaced environment.
- Commitment to safety and adherence to all site regulations.
- Must be willing to join the local union as required.
