The Role

The Chassis Controls Integration Tech Specialist is a key technical leader responsible for elevating the quality and speed of our vehicle development process for chassis controls and related disciplines. This role drives the adoption of advanced virtual engineering methods and leads cross-functional efforts to develop integrate and deploy co-simulation packages focused on chassis controls vehicle dynamics and adjacent domains. The Chassis Controls Tech Specialist works collaboratively across Virtual Design Development and Validation (VDDV) Vehicle Performance Validation Global Vehicle Hardware Engineering and Vehicle Software and Electronics Engineering as well as with external partners like Tier 1 suppliers and simulation tool vendors to ensure that tools processes and teams are technically aligned and enabled. Success in this role requires deep technical expertise strong leadership and influencing skills and a relentless focus on innovation in a rapidly evolving technology landscape.

What Youll Do

Strategy innovation and planning

  • Create and execute road map for chassis controls co-simulation development execution scaling and automation.
  • Lead capability development and strategy projects for chassis commodities in support of GMs vision of a predominantly virtual development process.
  • Stay abreast of competition and industry trends to identify opportunities that improve speed-to-market and cost efficiency.
  • Forecast and plan capability and resource needs and secure support for required resources to meet program and technology roadmaps.
  • Define strategic opportunities to innovate processes and methods that advance virtual development maturity and efficiency.

Supplier stakeholder and program leadership

  • Serve as the primary VDDV technical leadership connection with active chassis suppliers.
  • Maintain a strong connection with SMT and S&S to define component and system-level requirements and support issue resolution.
  • Own chassis supplier requirements associated with controls-integration virtualization (G4/C12) and collaborate with S&S on C9/C11.
  • Be accountable for chassis controls supplier deliverables supporting TFRP/PAR including timely issue escalation when quality or timing risks are identified.
  • Establish and maintain an efficient cohesive strategy to integrate supplier models into GM workstreams for VDDV Vehicle Performance and S&S.
  • Define requirements for supplier cosimulation packages and work with suppliers to ensure consistent high-quality on-time deliverables escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Define cosimulation package standards for results quality and run-time performance.
  • Lead resolution of program issues by aligning cosimulation partners to meet technical and timing demands.
  • Represent the needs of the chassis controls team among peers from other disciplines and external partners.

Technical leadership co-simulation and tools

  • Provide technical leadership for Simulation PDTs supporting active chassis controls and co-simulation workstreams.
  • Act as the single point of contact for chassis controls cosimulation users resolving usage concerns and enabling broad adoption.
  • Align software releases calibration milestones and vehicle hardware release milestones to ensure the virtual vehicle cosimulation package is consistently current and representative.
  • Be familiar with hands-on execution and lead the technical dialogue around the design development and integration of:
    • Virtual models representing both hardware and software behavior for active chassis systems such as Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) Electric Power Steering (EPS) Active Rear Steering (ARS) SemiActive Damping System (SADS) and others into co-simulation frameworks for Electric Vehicle (EV) Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) programs to enable vehicle dynamics performance and chassis controls software development calibration and validation.
    • Multibody and 1D vehicle dynamics models including vehicle mass aerodynamics brake systems front and rear steering systems front and rear suspension systems tire models propulsion systems and sensor models (e.g. Inertial Measurement Unit IMU) into SoftwareintheLoop (SIL) and HardwareintheLoop (HIL) simulation platforms.
    • Functional Mockup Unit (FMU)-based embedded controller models for EBCM EPS ARS SADS and other vehicle systems.
    • Serial data communication interfaces for embedded chassis controller models to simulate communication between Electronic Control Units (ECUs) through Controller Area Network (CAN) Local Interconnect Network (LIN) and Ethernet bus messages for SIL and HIL simulations.
    • Verification and validation of integrated virtual Electronic Control Units (vECUs) serial data communication systems and vehicle models to meet vehicle specific architecture and dynamic performance requirements for current and future model years.
    • Debugging and troubleshooting of issues in embedded software by analyzing source code written in C/C.
    • Development and validation of automated simulation run scripts.
    • Development of test procedures to enhance virtual vehicle development calibration and validation and collaboration with suppliers to troubleshoot issues in the virtual models provided for those activities.
    • Closedloop learning to validate the performance of chassis controller models and analysis of simulation data against vehicle data to improve the fidelity of virtual chassis controllers.
    • Integration of active chassis simulation components to enable loads prediction for structural design analysis of safetycritical components.
  • Lead strategic planning and implementation/utilization of Simulation Data Management (SDM) and version control tools to manage supplier assets virtual plant models and virtual controller models effectively leveraging tools such as GitHub.

Leadership communication mentoring and culture

  • Communicate complex technical content clearly and persuasively in both technical and leadership forums using highquality data and analysis to enable sound timely decision making.
  • Mentor engineers engaged with chassis controls to enable effective integration and application of co-simulation models for product development calibration and validation.
  • Serve as the primary connection and mentor for VDDV subsystem teams in the chassis domain (brakes driveline suspension and steering) ensuring consistent methods and best practices.
  • Support and develop new talent enabling continuous improvement of standard work and the development and deployment of new tools.
  • Guide and inspire engineers through mentorship and sharing of personal experience and expertise in chassis controls development fostering technical excellence and leadership behaviors.
  • Advocate for the adoption of virtual methods for vehicle design development and validation across the organization.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering Aerospace Engineering Software Engineering Computer Science or related field.
  • 8 years of industry experience with at least 5 years of relevant experience in chassis controls vehicle dynamics or closely related virtual development domains.
  • Collaboration and communication
    • Proven ability to work in crossfunctional teams balancing strong technical theory with practical program and hardware constraints.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to explain complex technical topics clearly to both technical peers and leadership to support datadriven decisions.

What Will Give you the Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering Aerospace Engineering Software Engineering Computer Science or related field.
  • 10 years of relevant experience in chassis controls vehicle dynamics or closely related virtual development domains.
  • Modeling simulation and coding skills
    • Hands-on experience with chassis controls virtualization to support development calibration and validation.
    • Experience with multibody dynamics tools (e.g. Simpack MSC ADAMS) to build run and postprocess baseline models interpret results and debug model issues.
    • Experience with realtime 1D vehicle dynamics tools (e.g. CarSim IPG CarMaker) to set up scenarios execute runs and interface with MATLAB/Simulink where needed.
    • Experience with vECU environments (e.g. dSPACE VEOS or equivalent) including executing simulations reviewing logs and supporting integration of models/plant components.
    • Experience in MATLAB/Simulink for scripting model setup parameter sweeps and data analysis.
    • Experience with modern version control systems (Git preferred with familiarity with SVN/TFS a plus) for branching pull requests and code reviews.
    • Experience with one or more programming/scripting languages such as Python and/or C/C and the ability to write clear welldocumented utilities to automate simulation workflows and data processing.
  • Experience with SDM/PLM systems (e.g. Teamcenter IBM Rational Team Concert) for model storage configuration management and traceability of virtual assets.
  • Demonstrated experience in an automotive OEM or Tier1 environment working on chassis controls or vehicle dynamics across EV PHEV and ICE programs.
  • Experience serving as a technical lead or mentor influencing decisions across multiple teams and helping less experienced engineers grow in chassis controls and virtual development.
