AAAS has an exciting opportunity for a paid summer internship within our Office of Public Affairs!
The international AAAS Science Journalism Awards honor professional journalists for distinguished reporting on the sciences engineering and mathematics. Before award submissions are reviewed by scientist experts and journalist judges our program withdraws entries that do not qualify for the contest or compete at the programs 2025 we received 1126 entries from 67 different countries. The intern will solicit entries for the contest through targeted email outreach and help with reviewing the eligibility of entries. The position will work closely with the Program Associate and Program Director.

What Youll Do
- Review contest entries and provide short written comments on submission eligibility
- Help assign entries to panels of scientist screeners for review
- Solicit entries for the contest through targeted email outreach
Minimum Requirements
- Pursuing a degree in communications journalism science or a related field Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Familiarity with major news outlets basic journalism literacy
- Comfortable assessing quality of reporting and writing
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong organization ability to juggle multiple assignments at once
Internship Details
This is a remote internship however those in or near the D.C. area have the option to work from our D.C. office and attend in-person events typically 1-2 times per week.This is a 12-week internship which will run fromâJune 1 2026 - August 21 2026. The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position isâ$17.95 per hour.
