DescriptionJob Summary
The ICU Technician provides high-quality patient-centered support within the Intensive Care Unit by performing delegated clinical and non-clinical tasks under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). This role assists with the delivery of direct patient care monitors vital signs and basic diagnostic data and supports ICU operations to ensure a safe clean and efficient care environment. The ICU Technician contributes to improved patient outcomes by supporting the critical care team in meeting the unique needs of high-acuity patients.
Essential Functions
- Provides direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of the RN following care plans and departmental protocols.
- Obtains and documents patient data including vital signs intake and output and other clinical observations alerting licensed personnel to abnormalities.
- Assists patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) including bathing grooming oral care elimination nutrition and mobility support.
- Supports patient mobility by turning positioning transferring and ambulating patients using proper body mechanics.
- Collects specimens for diagnostic testing ensures accurate labeling and facilitates timely transport to the lab.
- Assists with admissions discharges and patient transfers within or outside the ICU.
- Maintains a safe and orderly care environment by restocking supplies cleaning equipment and reporting maintenance issues.
- Serves as a monitor technician (Monitor Tech) for the unit observing telemetry and reporting changes to clinical staff as needed.
- Provides emotional support to patients and families demonstrating empathy and compassion in critical care settings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
- Completion of a Patient Care Technician (PCT) Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Medical Assistant program preferred
- 0-1 years of experience in a hospital or critical care setting required
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of basic patient care practices and terminology.
- Ability to work in a high-acuity fast-paced ICU environment with a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in collecting and documenting vital signs and patient observations.
- Ability to respond appropriately to emergency and crisis situations.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills with patients families and clinical staff.
- Understanding of infection prevention and patient safety practices.
- Basic computer and clinical documentation skills.
Licenses and Certifications
- BCLS - Basic Life Support issued by American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) or American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) BLS required
- CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant preferred
