Description

The Vice Chair for Administration (VCA) serves as the senior administrative leader for the Samuel Bronfman Department of Medicine and is an integral member in the collaboration integration and success of the One Mount Sinai enterprise vision. The position functions within a matrixed organizational structure and dual reports to the Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs and the System Chair of Medicine reflecting shared accountability to departmental leadership and enterprise administration.

The VCA directs the comprehensive administrative financial operational academic and research affairs of the Department of Medicine across the Mount Sinai Health System. As a key member of the Departments leadership team the VCA partners with departmental and system leaders to develop enhance and support the clinical academic and research missions of the Department of Medicine in alignment with Mount Sinai Health System strategy policies and performance expectations. The role balances advocacy for departmental priorities with stewardship of system-wide objectives ensuring consistency accountability and sustainable performance across all divisions and sites.

The Samuel Bronfman Department of Medicines mission is to deliver exceptional patient care advance cutting-edge research and educate the next generation of physicians. Faculty and staff across 13 divisions are committed to scientific discovery clinical excellence and improving patient outcomes across the communities served by Mount Sinai.



Responsibilities

Enterprise and Strategic Leadership:

  • Serve as a strategic partner with the Chair departmental leadership the Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs and Mount Sinai Health System leadership to advance the clinical academic research and operational priorities of the Department of Medicine within the context of the One Mount Sinai strategy.
  • Operate with dual accountability to departmental and enterprise leadership serving as both an advocate for the Department of Medicine and a steward of system-wide priorities.
  • Ensure departmental strategies resource allocation and operational decisions are aligned with enterprise goals policies regulatory requirements and performance expectations.
  • Identify growth opportunities and lead initiatives that enhance clinical academic research and financial performance across the Department.

Financial Management Controls and Performance Accountability:

  • Partner with centralized finance to ensure the financial stability and sustainability of the Department of Medicine consistent with Mount Sinai Health System policies and governance.
  • Partner with central finance resources and enterprise shared services to develop monitor and manage of departmental budgets forecasts and financial performance with more than 1700 faculty over 2000 employees and an annual operating budget of approximately $400 million.
  • Monitor analyze and report on established key performance indicators (KPIs) related to financial performance operational efficiency and physician productivity at the departmental and divisional levels and escalate or address variances as appropriate.
  • Support adherence to institutional financial policies internal controls compliance standards and audit requirements through coordination with enterprise stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with centralized and Health System Office (HSO) teams including the Office of Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) Revenue Cycle Office of FPA Finance and Budgeting Ambulatory Operations and other enterprise shared services
  • Contribute to the execution of financial plans that align departmental priorities with One Mount Sinai strategic objectives.

Clinical Operations and Faculty Practice Management:

  • In collaboration with Ambulatory Operations is responsible for implementation of standard workflows and practices across all Department of Medicine locations including physician productivity capacity management patient experience and operational performance.
  • Partner with clinical and business development leadership to identify opportunities for expansion of medical specialties and development of new and existing practices across the Mount Sinai Health System.
  • Lead operational planning performance monitoring and implementation of new clinical programs and services.

Enterprise Implementation and Operational Execution:

  • Serve as the liaison and departmental point of contact for enterprise-wide administrative initiatives and operational directives including regulatory and compliance-driven requirements emergency preparedness activities vaccination programs and compensation or bonus programs.
  • Translate enterprise policies and operational requirements into department-specific implementation plans ensuring timely coordination communication and execution across all divisions and sites.
  • Identify and mitigate operational financial regulatory and reputational risks affecting the Department and/or the Mount Sinai Health System.

Faculty Affairs Academic and Research Administration

  • Oversee faculty affairs including recruitment compensation planning promotion and tenure processes disciplinary matters and human resources administration.
  • Support faculty recruitment and program start-up through collaborative business planning cost-benefit analysis budget development space planning and organizational design.
  • Provide oversight of the Departments research enterprise including grants management clinical research compliance core facilities and research space planning and utilization.

Governance External Relationships and Risk Management:

  • Represent the Department on institutional and system committees and serve as a liaison between the Department and School Hospital and System leadership.
  • Provide guidance to department leadership and faculty regarding external business ventures professional service agreements and affiliations working closely with legal counsel and compliance offices to protect Mount Sinai Health System interests.
  • Oversee management of relationships with external for-profit and not-for-profit entities and ensure potential conflicts of interest are identified and appropriately managed.

People Leadership and Change Management:

  • Lead develop and mentor administrative leaders and staff; foster a culture of accountability professional development and operational excellence.
  • Effectively manage and lead change including implementation of new initiatives operating models and organizational structures in response to evolving departmental and enterprise needs.

    Performance in this role is evaluated based on effective monitoring reporting and management of established performance indicators including but not limited to:
  • Financial performance relative to budget and forecasts
  • Physician productivity and faculty practice performance
  • Operational efficiency compliance and risk mitigation
  • Successful implementation of enterprise initiatives
  • Growth and sustainability of clinical academic and research programs
  • Leadership effectiveness staff engagement and change execution


Qualifications

Education Requirements:

  • Masters degree or greater preferably in Healthcare Administration or a Health Science

Experience Requirements:

  • 7 years (greater preferred) of progressive health care administrative/leadership experience
  • 10 years of senior leadership experience including direct managerial responsibility strongly preferred
  • Prior leadership experience in academic medicine or a complex healthcare environment strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to operate effectively within a matrixed organizational structure strongly preferred
