Introduction
As an Environmental Engineer you will actively contribute to support CERN in limiting its impact on the environment mainly in the domains of water protection and hazardous substances.
Functions
- Act as the organisations reference expert for environmental protection in the domain of water and in the domain of hazardous substances.
- Monitor evaluate and address all existing and emerging issues related to effluent water quantity and quality and to hazardous substances.
- Analyse and propose mitigation measures on water-related issues and hazardous substances linked to the CERN campus industrial facilities accelerators and experiments.
- Propose common applicable environmental requirements for projects and existing activities.
- Develop CERN-specific environmental guidelines.
- Conduct site visits and environmental investigations and issue related reports. This includes the participation or coordination of environmental incidents/accidents follow-up.
- Share knowledge inform and proactively raise awareness on environmental protection best practices.
- Build synergies and work with other CERN Departments in view of reducing CERNs impact on environment and globally improve environmental protection.
- Interact with French speaking local technical authorities.
Qualifications :
Masters degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Environmental Engineering or a related field.
Experience:
- Experience in providing technical expertise in particular for environmental protection in the water domain and hazardous substances within multi-disciplinary teams operating technical installations.
- Hands-on chemical pollutants (metals organic or emerging pollutants) including monitoring characterisation and mitigation strategies.
- Experience in the technical application of environmental regulations.
- Hands-on experience with ecotoxicology subjects with the understanding of chemical and biological impacts on aquatic environments would be an asset.
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment and sanitation infrastructure including operational processes and environmental constraints or water treatment technologies such as physical chemical and biological treatment methods would be an asset.
Technical competencies:
- Knowledge of EU regulations in particular linked to water protection or hazardous substances (knowledge of French or Swiss Environmental regulations is an asset).
- Environmental protection environmental evaluations and implementation of prevention measures.
- Stakeholder relationship management.
- Drafting and writing of official documents in both French and English.
- Ability to analyse complex environmental data and translate findings into actionable recommendations.
