Job Description:

Primary Purpose

The Stationary Engineer 3rd Class is responsible for the safe and efficient operation preventive and breakdown maintenance of the heating cooling and related plant equipment operated at all campus locations as well as other duties as assigned.

Key Accountabilities

Strategic Planning

Supports strategic planning efforts addressing stewardship responsibilities and long-term sustainability of the Universitys campus facilities and infrastructure and maximizing opportunities for efficient delivery of campus services and optimal investments in University-wide infrastructure.

Duties or Responsibilities

Operations: Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Maintenance and repair of oil and gas fired boilers chillers water softeners and high purity water treatment systems air compressors ammonia based refrigeration units and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Operating and monitoring the utility plants building automation fire systems and elevator services.
  • Performing maintenance and repairs as required to keep equipment such as pumps air compressors water softeners and deionizers ammonia-based refrigeration units chillers and cooling tower systems operating in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Inspection and maintenance of building HVAC mechanical and plumbing system components.
  • Responding to emergency calls of various types such as fire alarms.
  • Creating reports of equipment conditions and requisitioning materials.
  • Reports to the Shift Engineer in the absence of the Chief Stationary Engineer
  • In the absence of a Stationary Engineer 2nd Class may be temporarily assigned as Shift Engineer and performs duties and responsibilities applicable to such assignment.

In consideration of the Universitys commitment to the safety and well-being of all faculty support staff students and visitors responsible for ensuring University facilities and departmental activities are compliant with all applicable legislation regulations codes and standards related to facilities operations as well as occupational health and environmental safety. Active in health and safety and incident prevention by adhering to departmental policy procedures and safe work practices required by the University health safety and environment management system (HSEMS) and in accordance with relevant health and safety legislation developing and enhancing a safety culture among support staff.

Performs the work of other trades as required to the limit of their skill and code requirements including work of a trade of a lower pay band.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Must have a minimum of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent and a minimum of an Ontario 3rd Class Operating Engineer Certificate.

Experience

  • Minimum of two years recent experience as an Ontario-certified 3rd Class Operating Engineer.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Experiencein the operation and maintenance of oil and gas fired boilers chillers water softeners air compressors and ammonia based refrigeration units and related auxiliary equipment.
  • Must be familiar with the operation of boiler control and building automation systems.
  • Must maintain a valid Ontario class G drivers license or equivalent.
  • Physical and Sensory Demands: Routine physical activities include standing walking bending crouching stooping reaching lifting and carrying light (up to 5kg or 11lb) medium (5 to 20kg or 11 to 44lb) and/ or heavy (over 20kg or 44lb) objects pushing pulling working in an awkward position and/ or maintaining one position for a long period. Possesses ability to reduce any strain by changing positions and/ or alternating performing other activities.
  • Working Environment: Provides shift relief coverage which includes nights and weekend work. Occasional exposure to dangerous or unpleasant environmental conditions such as accessing and working in confined spaces accessing and working at heights exposure to noise chemicals odours extreme temperatures and adverse weather conditions.
  • Other: Performs the work of other trades as required to the limit of their skill and code requirements including work of a trade of a lower pay band.
