Your Role

Mallee District Aboriginal Services (MDAS) is one of Victorias largest Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations.

We have an opportunity for a dedicated Convenor - Aboriginal Family Led Decision Making (AFLDM) to join our team and work in partnership with Child Protection to improve outcomes for Aboriginal Children young people and their families.

This important role focuses on leading and modelling collaborative practice supporting family engagement in the AFLDM process providing information and guidance to Child Protection convenors and ensuring families voices needs and cultural perspectives are clearly communicated.

The Convenor AFLDM is responsible for gathering cultural information to develop implement and monitor Cultural Support Plans for Aboriginal children and young people. This role requires close partnership with families children the Aboriginal Child Specialist Advice and Support Service (ACSASS) Child Protection and Community members to ensure culturally safe and responsive practice.

Travel across all MDAS locations including occasional overnight travel may be required.

This is a permanent full time position based at our Mildura office location.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Knowledge of the legislative policy and practice requirements relating to Aboriginal children families and community including understanding of the effects of the Stolen Generation in Aboriginal communities.

  • Knowledge and ability to embed in practice the core responsibilities and principles underpinning the Children Youth and Families Act 2005
    and the Child Wellbeing Act 2005.

  • Ability to apply the best interests case practice model in undertaking assessments decision-making planning and interventions to respond to a
    child or young persons safety and development.

  • Ability to develop plan implement manage and evaluate a program and experience in recording case notes and preparing written reports including reports with statistical data collected from service delivery reporting.

  • Ability to communicate consult liaise and negotiate with a broad range of people both Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal people at all levels to achieve broad project objectives and goals.

  • Ability to take action to provide services that are inclusive of Aboriginal people and engage in learning about other cultures to better establish relationships and improve services

Qualification/s:
Qualification of Certificate IV in Community Services or higher with relevant experience.

Other Screening Requirements:
Valid Drivers License that allows you to drive in Australia.
Victorian Employee Working with Children Check card.
National Police Check.
