Job Summary

Introduction

MWRDs Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.

Paid Interns

Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour.

Required Documents:

  • Letter of recommendation from a class instructor professor or Internship Coordinator from current school or university.
  • Cover letter stating interest in position.
  • Resume.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university and will be enrolled in the 2026/2027 school year.
  • Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
  • You must be a citizen or national of the United States or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.

Description:

The Monitoring & Research Department of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (the District) is seeking an intern to support its microplastics research efforts. The primary responsibility of the intern will be to learn from and assist a research scientist in microplastics sampling and analysis.

The interns work will involve collecting wastewater samples compiling and organizing data and conducting microplastics analyses using microscopy and other laboratory techniques. Through this role the intern will develop skills in proper sample collection microscopy-based identification data management to support scientific interpretation and effective collaboration with laboratory staff.

Because microplastics research is an emerging and rapidly evolving field that requires extensive laboratory work the intern will gain valuable handson experience and foundational knowledge in a growing area of environmental science.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Completion of at least one laboratory course in environmental science engineering chemistry or biology

  • A minimum of two years of coursework in one or more of these fields

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word Excel and PowerPoint along with basic data analysis skills

Educational Requirements:

Applicants must be a current graduate or undergraduate student seeking a degree in Chemistry Environmental Science or Biology.
